MOUNT CLEMENS.

1

Incorporated as a city under the general incorporation law of 1879; contains three wards; population, 3,061, according to census of 1880. It has a transient popula- tion of 500, and is situated on the line of the Grand Trunk Railway. Water com- munication by way of Clinton river aud lake St. Clair; daily boats. Mt. Clemens is one of the earliest settlements in the state, the first settlement dating back to about 1784. The place grew slowly, until about six or seven years ago, when the rapid development of the farming country forced the growth of the village as a mar- ket town. The discovery of the famous mineral waters added an impetus to the

growth and importance of the place. The city is to-day one of the famous resorts for invalids from all parts of the country. Large and commodious hotels have been erected for the accommodation of persons in search of health. The recent contro- versy in regard to the location of the coun- ty seat has resulted in favor of this city, and a new conrt house, to cost $25,000, is in process of erection, on the site of the old one. The city contains five excellent hotels and many boarding houses. The enterprising proprietors of the Avery House have built their hotel on the site of the old Mineral Springs House; it is a very handsome and commodious structure, and connected with the bath house by a covered way, heated with steam to the temperature of the main house, so that guests can go from their own bed chambers to their baths in dressing gown and slip- pers, and after bathing return to their beds without danger of exposure to any change of temperature.

There are 6 churches, representing the Episcopalian, Presbyterian, Methodist, Lu- theran, Baptist and Roman Catholic de- nominations, 4 stave aud heading mills, 3 saw-mills, 2 breweries, 1 foundry, 1 grist mill, 1 tannery. 4 carriage-making estab- lishinents, 3 livery stables, an excellent Union or graded school, besides the usual business houses of a flourishing town. Newspapers, the Monitor and the True Rec- ord (Republican), and Press (Democratic).

The actual settlement of the present site was about the year 1818.

Telegraph, Western Union and United States. Express, Canadian. A telephone line connects all the principal points with a.central office. George M. Crocker, may- or. George HI. Snook, postmaster.
