Established as a settlement in 1874, and located on the Fayette Br. L. S. & M. S. Ry, in Fairfield township, Lenawee coun- ty, is a village of 250 inhabitants, contain- ing a Free Methodist church, a district school, a steam flouring mill aud a saw- mill. Grain, lumber, flour, cheese, live stock and other farm products, aggregating 2,002 tous, were shipped in 1879. Price of improved laud from $50 to $60 per acre; unimproved from $50 to $50. According to the recent census, has s population of 133. It was first settled in 1838, is located in Gratiot township, St. Clair county, and is a station on the P. H. EN. W. Ry, 17 miles northwest of Port Huron and 79 from Detroit. It has good farming land around it, and is a shipping point for wheat, barley, peas, oats, hay and wood. An important railroad center in Fayette township, Hillsdale county, lies at the in-
tersection of the L. S. & M. S. Ry main line and Kalamazoo Div. with the Ft. W. & J. R. R. The place was settled in 1830. and incorporated as a village in 1855. It is on the St. Joseph river, and has manu- factories of cotton and woolen goods. car- riages, castings. sash, doors, etc. The flouring mill burned some time since has not been rebuilt. Grain, live stock, fruit. cotton and woolen goods are the leading exports. Amount of freight shipped last year, via the 'L. S. & M. S. Ry, 13,059 tons: received. 10.196 tons. There are Baptist, Methodist, Presbyterian and Epis copal churches. a graded school building. costing $40,000, with 457 pupils, a ladies' library of 1,212 volumes, 2 public halls. ? newspapers, the Hillsdale County Gazette and the Jonesville Weekly Independent, of- fices of the American aud United States Express and Western Union Telegraph.
