The county seat of Lapeer county, a flourishing little city of 3,000 inhabitants. is located on Flint river, at the crossing of the C. & G. T. Ry and D. & B. C. R. R .. 20 miles east of Flint, 45 west of Port Ilu ron, 48 south of Bay City and 60 north of Detroit. The site of the village was taken up by A. N. ceived a village charter, and in 1868 be- came a city. In 1871 it secured a railway outlet via Port Huron, and in 18,2 was tapped by the D. & B. C. R. R., a branch of which. 6 miles long, here diverges to Five Lakes. The river affords good water power and several manufacturing enterprises are sustained. Among these are 2 large flour- ing mills. a tannery, 3 foundries and ma- chine shops, agricultural implements 1 large and several small carriage and wagon factories, etc. There are 6 hotels, the Abram House being the leading one. An opera house and several good blocks have been erected within the past two years. A large body of excellent agricultural land is found in this county, and Lapeer, owing to its central position and superior railroad facilities, is a prominent shipping point for grain and other farin products. LAWRENCE.


The village of Lawrence is situated on the Paw Paw river in Lawrence township, Van Buren county, and is the present western terminus of the P. P. & T. and S. H. R. R., 9 miles due west of Paw Paw village, and 6 east of Hartford station on the C. & W. M. R. R., with which it is connected by daily mail stage; fare, 50 cents. The place was originally settled in 1837 and incorporated as a village in 1869: it now has about 800 inhabitants aud con- tains Baptist, Congregational, Free Metho- dist, and Methodist Episcopal churches, a Union school, a flour and saw-mill run by water power, and two saw-mills, planing mill and foundry operated by steam. LAWTON.


An incorporated village of 800 inhabi- tants, settled in 1832 and located in Aut- werp township, Van Buren county, at the junction of the P. P., T. & S. H. R. R. with the M. C. R. R., 4 miles southeast of Paw Paw, 16 west of Kalamazoo. 160 west of Detroit, and 124 from Chicago. It is situated in a region embracing oak open- ings and black ash swamp lands, of which grain, fruit and live stock are staples. The village contains Baptist, Methodist and Presbyterian churches, a large Union school building and other indications of material prosperity. The exports by rail for 1880 amounted to 8,526 tons. A postoffice and station on the C. & W. M. R. R., in the township of Lee, Allegan county, 18} miles southwest of Allegan, the county seat. It is located on Black river, by which name the station is known, and has saw and planing mills, United Brethren and Evangelical churches and a public school. Distance to Grand Junc- tion, 3} miles; to Bangor, its banking point, 10 miles, and to Detroit 174 miles. Population, 85. Shipments, lumber, wood and some farm products: total in 1879, 300 car loads. It is 13 miles northwest of Saginaw, 9 southeast of Midland, the county seat, and 5 south of Smithville, on the F. & P. M. Ry. Hay, grain and potatoes are marketed. A village and postoffice in the township of Hamtramck. Wayne county, 4 miles north of the limits of Detroit. About 800 inhabitants reside within the limits of the postoffice. Its proximity to Detroit makes market gardening a profitable occupation. and this with brick making are the princi- pal industries. Land in the vicinity rates from $150 to $200 per acre. It has 8 Methodist church, saw-mill and hotel. Postoffice at present vacant.

LEETSVILLE.


A postoffice and station on the G. R. & I. R. R., in Rapid River township, Kal- kaska county. 5 miles north of Kalkaska court house, and 73 above Reed City. The place consists of a store, dwelling and sta- tion. Mail. daily. S. M. Vinton. post- master and general store.


LELAND.


A village of 400 inhabitants, settled in 1854, lies at the mouth of Carp river, the outlet of Carp lake, on the west shore of the peninsula forming Leclenew county, directly opposite North Manitou island. It is 11 miles southwest of Northport, the county seat, and 25 northwest of Traverse City, its nearest railroad approach, with each of which places it has a tri-weekly stage line. A saw-mill derives power from the river, and the place has a blast furnace and some other interests. Catholic, Con- gregational and Lutheran churches and a graded school.
