KALAMAZOO.

One of the most flourishing and attract- ive of the larger towns of Michigan: is the county seat of Kalamazoo county. It oc- cupies a site of remarkable beauty, on the west bank of the Kalamazoo river, in the midst of a wealthy agricultural section of country, and is noted for the beauty of its broad, finely shaded streets, its handsome churches, substantial business houses and elegant residences. Titus Bronson. the first white settler, located here in 1829, and was for a time quite prominent in the young settlement, but afterward, losing all his property, he died in Connecticut in extreme poverty. The village, originally called Bronson, was organized in 1831. In 1839 the population was 400. In 1843 it became incorporated. In 1844 it had in- creased to 1,500. In 1846 railroad com- munication was established, and from that time the village grew with increased vigor and rapidity. Its population, according to the census of 1880. members 12,078. In nearly all of the essentials Kalamazoo is a full-fledged city. It is, however, as vet an incorporated village, and is governed by a president and S trustees. Its police force is efficient, is uniformed and under the control of a marshal. In addition to its police force it has a paid fire depart ment with a force of 53 men, and also has a complete system of water works on the Holly system. These works were erected. buildings included, at a cost of $100,000. As a railroad center it is sur- passed only by Detroit and Grand Rapids, The . roads centering here or passing through the town are the main line of the M. C. R. R., the G. R. & L .. the Kalamazoo Div. of the L. S. & M. S .. and the South Haven Div. of the M. C. R. R. It is cx- pected that the K .. L. & H. R. R. will ia due time be completed. thus giving ingress and egress at every point of the compass. By the above lines it is 99 miles east of South Haven, 35 north of Sturgis. 48 south of Grand Rapids. 3; north of White Pigeon, 144 west of Detroit, and 140 cast of Chicago. Among the prominent fes tures of the place are its educational insti tutions, among which are the Michigan Female Seminary, modeled after the famous Mt. Holyoke Seminary, Massachusetts, the

Kalamazoo College, chartered in 1855 and founded by the Baptists of Michigan, a Roman Catholic school attached to the church, and others. In the above institu- tions the course of study is practical and thorough. Of its free school system Kala- mazoo is justly proud. Six buildings are occupied for free school purposes, and it is estimated that the number of children in attendance, ranging in age from 5 to 20 years, is over 3,000. The cash valua- tion of free school property is estimated at $80,400. These schools are well supplied with all the modern auxiliaries for teach- ing, such as a reference library and philo- sophical and chemical apparatus. Another prominent feature of the place, and which is an indication of its cultured tastes, isits district library, which contains at the present date 7,900 volumes. The library is free to all residents of the district.

Three excellent newspapers are publish- ed, the Gazette (Dem. ), the Telegraph (Rep.), and the Weekly Mail. The two former publish daily and weekly editions.

The village possesses 15 church edifices, costing from $10,000 to $40,000 each. Of these 2 are Baptist, 2 Congregational, 2 Episcopal, and 1 each German Lutheran, Jewish, Methodist Episcopal, Mission Chapel, Presbyterian, Reformed. Roman Catholic, True Dutch Reformied and Uni- tarian.

There are also lodges of all the promi- nent secret societies and a number of oth- ers, the most important being the Ladies' Library Association, with its collection of 2,800 volumes, and the Young Men's Li- brary Association, which has 3,000 books on its shelves. Kalamazoo also has a well armed, equipped and drilled military com- pany, the Kalamazoo Light Guard, and which forms a part of the Second Regi- ment of Michigan State troops. It has 3 bands of music. The public buildings of Kalamazoo are not minerous, but it possesses a jail, which was erected at a cost of $40,000, a court house, Corporation Hall, and the Michigan State Asylum for the Insane, located on the hill west of the town, and which commands a magnificent view of country to the eastward, of 15 or 20 miles. The commercial and manufac- turing interests of the town are varied and commensurate for a place of its import- auce. It has 2 national banks, each with a capital of $100,000 and a surplus of an equal amount. There is also the Kalama- zoo City Bank, capital $60,000. The ludian name Ke- Kan-Amazoo, from which Kala-

mazoo is derived, has reference to the river. and signities " Boiling Pot." A mail stage runs to Richland, 10 miles, daily, and to Prairieville, 22 miles, tri-weekly. Tele- graph, Western Union and Atlantic & Pa- cific. Express, American and United States. Lucien B. Kendall, postmaster. BUSINESS DIRECTORY.
