A village of 200 inhabitants, sometimes called Nicholsville, in Volinia township, Cass county, 15 miles northeast of Cassop- olis and ? southeast of Decatur. The Dowagiac river affords water power. Flour, saw and shingle mills and a tannery represent the manufacturing interests of the place. Grain, grass, fruit and wool are staple agricultural products. It has 8 daily stage line to Decatur and Cassopolis, and a daily mail. J. M. Goodspeed, post- master.

A thriving village of 600 inhabitants, and the county seat of Emmet county, is situ- ated on the north shore of Little Traverse bay, the harbor being one of the finest to be found on the great lakes. It is a favor- ite watering place, 2 fine summer resorts being located in close proximity. The

roadbed is already completed for the ex- tension of the G. R. & I. R. R., and it is also the original terminus of the Detroit, Lansing & Saginaw road. The village contains several fine stores and dwellings, a beautiful school building, 2 church edi- fices, a grist mill, saw-mill, 2 wagon shops, etc. The village is improving rapidly, nearly 100 buildings (which are of a sub- stantial character) having been erected this season. It has many fine springs of pure water, aud is backed up with some of the finest farming lands to be found in Michi- gan, with abundance of magnificent hard- wood timber. Two newspapers are pub- lished. the Little Tracerxe Republican and the Emmet County Independent. Lumber, wood. maple sugar, fish, ice and potatoes are shipped. LOWELL.


The village of Lowell is situated on Flat river, about half a mile above its junction with the Grand. It is on the D., G. H. & M. Ry, 19 miles east of Grand Rapids and 139 west of Detroit, in the township of Lowell, Kent county. It dates its founda- tion from the erection of a grist mill here by C. S. Hooker in 1849, and became in. corporated as a village in 1861. The river affords a moderate water power, utilized by a woolen factory, planing mill, flouring mill and saw mill. The place also has planing. flouring and shingle mills pro- pelled by steam. There are. Methodist, Catholic. Baptist and Congregational churches, 3 public schools, a school library, a national bank with a capital of $100,000, a weekly newspaper, the Journal, 3 hotels, the Potter being the principal one, and several large stores. A good farming country surrounds Lowell and large ship- ments of grain are made here, received from the adjacent interior towns. Express. American. Telegraph, Western Union. LUDINGTON.


The western terminus of the F. & P. M. Ry, on the shore of lake Michigan, at the mouth of the Pere Marquette river, is the capital of Mason county, 236 miles north- west of Detroit, and 85 by boat from Mil- waukee, Wis. The village was platted and recorded in September, 1867, there being only one store in the place at that time, and was known as the village of Pere Marquette up to 1874, when it became incorporated as the city of Ludington. Its population, according to the official census taken in June, 1880, was 4,190. and the present population, including the imme- diate vicinity, will fall but very little, if any, short of 5.000. The harbor here, · known as Pere Marquette lake, is one of the finest and safest on lake Michigan, be- ing about two miles in length and one in width, the depth of water is over 40 feet, although the channel connecting with lake Michigan is but 12 feet. Ludington has 7 saw and 4 shingle mills, cutting annually 130,000,000 feet of lumber, 80,000,000 shingles and 11,000,000 lath, a planing mill and sash, door and blind factory, a wooden bowl factory, 2 foundries and machine shops, a boiler shop. a brewery, a grain elevator of 75,000 bushels capacity, 2 banks, and several good hotels.


Three weekly newspapers are published here, the Record, the Appeal and the Dem- ocrat. The public schools are 4 in num- ber, being a new brick central school, just completed at a cost of $12,000, and 3 ward schools. The churches are Baptist, Nor- wegian Baptist, Catholic, Congregational, Danish, Episcopal, German Lutheran, Swedish Lutheran, Methodist and Presby- terian. Among the recent improvements are & $10,000 jail building, and a large number of business places and private res-


idences, most of which are of a substantial character. The Goodrich line of steamers furnish communication daily with Manis- tee and Milwaukee, a small steamer makes two daily trips to Pentwater, and in the winter daily stages run to both Manistee and Pentwater.
