GRASS LAKE.
A pleasant, incorporated village of about 800 inhabitants, on the main line of the M. C. R. R., 65 miles west of Detroit and 11 east of Jackson. It is in Grass Lake township, in the eastern part of Jackson county, in a very fertile and well settled section of country, of which wheat, grass. cattle, sheep and hogs are staples, though all the cereals and potatoes are cultivated In being without water power the village lacks one of the essential features of busi- ness prosperity, and not being a manufac- turing point it depends chiefly for its sup- port upon the surrounding agricultural interests. A manufactory of cooperage and a flour mil! are the only industries. The place has 3 churches, Methodist, Bap- tist and Congregational. all handsome buildings, and a graded school. The price of land hereabouts ranges from $75 to $100 per acre. Grass Lake was first settled in 1829 and was incorporated as a village in 1871. Express, American. Telegraph, Western Union. L. GRATTAN.
Or Grattan Center as it is sometimes called, is a hamlet of 150 populalion, set- tled in 1836. iu Grattan township. Kent county. It is 22 miles northeast of Grand Rapids and 155 from Detroit. Lowell, ou the D., G. H. &M Rv. 12 miles south, and Kiddville, on the D., L. & N. R. R .. 8 .miles east, are used as shipping points. It is on Seeley creek, a tributary of Flat river, and manufactures flour and wagons. A mall stage runs daily to Lowell. at which point the nearest bank is located. J. R. Trask, postmaster.

GRAYLING.
A thriving incorporated village of 350 inhabitants, is the county seat of Crawford county. It was first settled in 1872 and is on the Mackinaw Div. M. C. R. R., 93 miles above Bay City and 25 south of Gay- lord, the present northern terminus of the road. The Au Sable river, upon which it is located, affords good nuntilized water power. The surrounding country is chieny pine forest, and a steam saw mill is the only manufacturing interest. The ship. ments for the year ending July 31. 1850. chiefly lumber, were 10.253 tons. Among
