The island is hilly and rocky; a steep hill rises abruptly in the rear of the village, on which is situated an old fort, still garri- soned by two companies of United States troops. The pure, invigorating atmos- phere, and the beauty of the scenery, with the many interesting features of the island, render it extremely popular as a summer resort. There are four first-class hotels in the town, which, during the summer, are thronged with guests, each season increas- ing the patronage. The place has a Roman Catholic and a Protestant mission church, a Union school building, a neat court house, and a dozen or more stores. Fish and Indian goods are the principal shipments. Communication by boat daily with Cheboygan and Petoskey. The steam- ers of the N. T. Co., W. T. Co. and C. & I. S. Co. also call here.
