HOLLAND.
Was first settled in 1846 by a colony of Hollanders, which nationality still largely predominates. It is a flourishing city of nearly 3,000 inhabitants in Holland town- ship, Ottawa county, situated at the junc- tion of the C. & W. M. R. R .. the Grand Rapids branch of said line and the G. H. R. R., 90 miles above New Buffalo, 20 be- low Grand Haven, 25 southwest of Grand Rapids, 23 northwest of Allegan and 180 from Detroit, via Lansing, Ionia and Grand Rapids.
In 1867 the place was incorporated as a city, and was almost destroyed by fire in 1871, but has since been rebuilt in a more substantial manner. It has a good natural harbor at the head of Black lake, which is being improved by the general government, and in which a permanent channel of 9 feet will be obtained during the coming summer. Prominent among the architectural features of Holland are its churches and educational institutions; of the former there are 3 Reform, 1 True Reform, 1 Episcopal and 1 Methodist. Be- sides a Union and a ward school, both of which have a large attendance, the town is the seat of Hope College, which was located here in 1851, and has recently been declared open to students of both sexes. It received some 125 students during 1880. The courses are thorough and the faculty able, hence those graduated from this school of learning attain high rank in the scholastic and mercantile world. The fame of this college is far-reaching, as evi- denced by the appearance on the roll of three JJapanese.
Four newspapers are published, De Grondwet, De Wachter. De Hope and the Holland City Jeres. The assessed valuation of real and personal prop-
erty, at one-third of its actual worth, is 8267.625, and the total indebtedness $3,400 for city improvements and $13,000 in school bonds, the latter payable in ten years, interest at 6 per cent. Holland is. becoming a prominent grain market, and wheat, with leather, fruit and general farm products, are largely shipped. The leading manufactures are wooden ware and leather. The Cappon & Bertsch Leather Co., doing an extensive business in the latter line, this firm have made great improvements on their tannery property (about $12,000) during the past year, and in a recent adju- dication were awarded a gold medal for best results in non-acid sole leather above all competition in the United States. Is situated in the northwest corner of Oakland county, at the intersection of the Flint & Pere Marquette and Detroit, Grand Haven & Milwaukee Railways, in one of the finest agricultural districts of Michigan. It was first settled in 1836, in- corporated in 1865, and. according to the recent census, contains 1,503 inhabitants. Excellent water power is, supplied by the Shiawassee river. The village is supplied with the Holly system of water-works, contains a large flouring mill with a capa- city of 225 barrels of new process flour per day, grain elevator, four-story high school building, 5 churches, 2 National banks and the principal business portion of the town is composed of handsome new brick buildings.
