JACKSON.
The first white settlement on the site of what is now the city of Jackson was made as early as 1829, Horace Blackman of Tioga county, N. Y., and some others be- ing the first to locate here. They traveled from Ann Arbor to this point on an In- dian trail through an unbroken wilderness. reaching here on the third day of July of the above year. Upon inspecting the locality it was discovered to be a favorite camping ground of the Indians, somc nine or ten trails from different points meeting here. Believing that it would eventually become an important commer- cial center Mr. Blackman determined to locate, and after a brief sojourn he re- turned to Ann Arbor, whence he proceeded to Monroe and obtained from the Gov. ernment a duplicate patent of certain lands which he had staked out. Soon afterwards, with a brother, he returned and erected a log cabin. From this time forward other people from the east began to appear, and it was only a short time before the future success of JJackson as an interior commercial center was assured.

700 JAC MICHIGAN STATE GAZETTEER JAC
In the year 1838, by an act of the Legis- lature, the State Prison was located at this place, and its erection soon after com- menced. When first organized as a village the place was called Jacksonburg, but in 1838 the Legislature passed an act chang- ing it to Jackson. In the month of De- cember, 1841, the Michigan Central Rail- road was finished to this place, and trains began running regularly before the close of the year. In 1843 the village of Jack- son was incorporated by act of the Legis- lature. In 1856 the coal mines of Jackson first excited the practical attention of our capitalists, and now there are 5 mines in active operation within the city limits, forming a very important element in its prosperity. In 1857 the Jackson branch of the Michigan Southern & Northern In- diana railway (now the Lake Shore & Michigan Southern) was completed to Jack- son and opened for business. Jackson was incorporated as a city by act of the Legislature February 14th, of the same year. The Jackson, Lansing & Saginaw railroad (now called the Saginaw Division of the Michigan Central), was completed to Mason in December, 1865, and was completed to the Saginaws in December, 1867. The Grand River Valley railroad (now called the Grand Rapids Division of the Michigan Central), was completed to Grand Rapids in the spring of 1870. The Air Line railroad (now called the Air Line Division of the Michigan Central), was completed to Niles in February, 1871. The Fort Wayne, Jackson & Saginaw (now the Fort Wayne & Jackson railroad) was com- pleted to Fort Wayne in December, 1870. In 1871 the extensive machine and other shops of the Michigan Central Railroad Company and its branches, were located here, and Jackson was also made the western terminus of the eastern division and the eastern terminus of the west- ern division of the main line. These changes in the management of the Michi- gan Central brought a large number of skilled artisans and laborers to the city, as well as a great many men who were en- gaged in various capacities in running the trains of the various divisions. The ag- gregate amount now paid each month by the Michigan Central Company to its em- płovesat this point is about sixty thousand dollars. The leading manufactures consist of chemicals, paper pulp, sewer pipe, pot- tery, artificial stone, brick, wagons, furni- ture, cooperage, agricultural implements, boots and shoes, middlings purifiers, cigars,
