GRAND HAVEN.
Is situated at the mouth of Grand river, on the shore of lake Michigan, and is one of the most important ports on the eastern shore of that lake. It is in the northeast corner of Ottawa county, of which it is the seat of justice, and is the western terminus of the D., G. H. & M. Ry, via which it is 31 miles west of Grand Rapids and 189 west of Detroit. It is also a station on the Grand Haven R. R., via which and the C. & W. M. R. R. it is 118 miles north of New Buffalo and 185 from Chicago. Be- sides its excellent railroad facilities, daily communication is afforded with Chicago and Milwaukee by the Goodrich line of steamers, and tri-weekly by Ganoe's line with Grand Rapids. The municipal gov- ernment of the city is vested in a mayor, recorder, two supervisors, treasurer, mar- shal, city attorney, chief engineer fire de- partment, street commissioner and director of the poor, who constitute the executive department, and whose terms expire first Monday in April, 1881, and a legislative department, consisting of eight aldermen. two from each ward, whose terms expire one-half in April, 1881, and the other iu April, 1882. Lumber is the principal arti- cle of manufacture. There are several mills which turn out an aggregate of 1,500,000 feet per week. Fishing is an im- portant interest, some seven or eight steanı tugs and sail boats being engaged in this industry. Ship building is also carried on. Within the corporate limits are 12 churches. one Union and three ward school build- ings, the former costing $50,000, a library containing 1,200 volumes, and a neat music hal !. The Cutler House, erected at a cost of $200.000. is the leading hotel. Three weekly newspapers are published, the Grand Haven Herald. (Republican), the Ners-Journal, and the Ottura County Com-

Spring lake, which lies adjacent, is a beautiful sheet of water, nine miles in length; it affords fine opportunities for fishing and sailing. In addition to these attractions, and to the broad area of lake Michigan, with its surf-bathing, Grand Haven is in the center of the great fruit- belt of Michigan. It is ou Black river, in Columbia township, Van Buren county, 20 miles northwest of Paw Paw. the county seat. It has a saw-mill. and ships lumber, timber, ties, tan bark, whea: and fruit. The, place was settled in 1s.1. and its population now is about 200. Within the past four years several thousand acres of land in the vicinity have been cleared and improved, a large portion of which will be devoted to the culture of fruit. Express, American.
