HOWELL.


The judicial seat of Livingston county. is an attractive village containing. accord- ing to the census of 1880, a population of 2,276. It is centrally located in Howell township, on the line of the D., L. & N. R. R., 32 miles southeast of Lansing. about the same distance northeast of Jack- son, aud 51 northwest of Detroit. Wheat is the great staple agricultural product of this section, as high as 40 bushels to the acre being grown in good seasons. Very good water power is obtained at a point about one mile north of the village, where flour and saw-mills are located. Among the public buildings are 5 churches, Bap- tist, Catholic. Methodist, Presbyterian and Episcopal, all of which are ueat and sub- stantial. There is a large graded school building employing ten teachers, and cost- ing to build $40,000. The court house and 3 large brick blocks of recent construction are also worthy of note. The Masons, Odd Fellows and Grangers have prosperous or- ganizations, and the press is represented by 2 weekly papers, The Livingston Republican and the Democrat. The original settlement was formed in 1828, the village laid off in 1835 and incorporated in 1963. the railroad was opened to it in 18;l. The real and personal property of the village has a valuation of $1,200,000, and the in debtedness consists of bonds issued in Fcb ruary, 1868, for $25,000, with interest al

A hamlet in the northern part of Eaton county, in Roxana township, 15 miles northwest of Charlotte, the county seat. Grand Ledge, on the D., L. & N. R. R., 9 miles northeast, is its bank and railroad point. It has steam saw and flour mills, and ships butter, eggs, poultry, game, furs, etc. Population. 150. HUBBARDSTON.


A thriving village of 700 inhabitants. originally settled in 1855, and incorporated in 1868, is situated on a tributary of Maple river, known as Fish creek. in North Plains township, northeast corner of Ionia county. It is the manufacturing center and source of supplies for quite an ex- tensive region of excellent farming coun- try. Among its industries arc a manufac- tory of windmills, a saw-mill, a flouring mill, a planing mill, sash and door factory. and cider mill. It has Catholic, Methodist and Congregational churches, a graded school of 3 teachers, a private bank, and the usual mercantile branches, which are represented by several good stores. By a fire which occurred here in the fall of 1877. the principal hotel and several other buildings were destroyed. Hubbardston is on the daily mail stage route from Pe- wamo north to Carson City, 7 miles from the former place, which is its nearest sta- tion, on the D., G. H. & M. Ry. It is 17 miles northeast of lonia, and 119 from De- troit. Improved farms command from $35 to $70 acre. Stage fare to Pewamo, 50 cents; to Carson City, $1. J. R. Abbott, postmaster.

Next to Adrian the most important town in Lenawee county, has, according to the census of 1880, 2,300 inhabitants. It is


located on the Tiffin river, in Hudso township, near the Hillsdale county line, and is a prominent station on the L. S. & M. S. Ry, 17 miles west of Adrian, 16 east of Hillsdale. 91 southwest of Detroit. 52 northwest of Toledo. and 192 east of Chi- cago. Hudson is noted as a wide-awake, enterprising place. It i- in the midst of a good farming country, and is an important shipping point for the adjacent interior towns.


The river furnishes moderate water power, and the manufactures consist of carriage wood work, flour, furniture. pumps, butter tubs, and wooden ware. There are 5 churches, Baptist, Catholic, Congregational, Episcopal and Methodist, 2 graded Union schools, a Catholic school, 2 private banks. an opera house with a seating capacity of 1,000, and 2 newspa- pers, the Post and the Gazette.

Claims a population of 200 and was lo- cated in 1856, in Georgetown township, Ottawa county, 30 miles southeast of Grand Hlaven, the seat of justice. It is a station on the C. & W. M. R. R., 12 miles south- west of Grand Rapids, and 169 from De- troit. It has Baptist and Congregational churches, 2 steam saw-mills, a cheese-box factory, cheese factory, aud 3 or more stores. laimber, grain, cheese and general farm products are shipped to the extent of 100 cars annually. Semi-weekly stage to Blendou, 7 miles northwest. Express. American. Telegraph, Western Union. Banking done at Grand Rapids. A shoe- maker and harnessmaker would find good openings here. Homer E. HUMBOLDT.


A mining village of 800 population, settled in 1868, in Ely township Mar- quette county. It is on the M., H. & O. R. R., 27 miles west of Marquette, the county seat, 686 by rail or 475 by water from Detroit. The village is on the Es- canaba river in a rough hilly section of country, and is the location of the Ed- wards and Humboldt iron mines.
