MUSKEGON.

The largest and most important city on the cast shore of lake Michigan, and the greatest lumber manufacturing place in the world, is a flourishing and rapidly improv- ing city of 12 000 population, and the coun- ty seat of Muskegon county. Its name is derived from the river, which at this point empties into, or rather widens out and fornis Muskegon lake, a splendid sheet of water, about 6 miles long and from 1 to ? tuiles in width, making one of the best and safest harbors on the whole chain of lakes, and of incalculable benefit for boom- ing purposes for the 30 saw-mills ou is shores. Muskegon was first settled in 1512. platted in 1849, became a village in 1961. and was incorporated as a city in 18;0. Its railroads are the Chicago & West Michi Lan R. R., extending from New Buffalo to Pentwater, with a branch from here to Big Rapids, and the Grand Haven R. R .. extending from here to Allegan, via Grind

Haven and Holland. The Goodrich line of steamers also furnish communication daily with Grand Haven and Chicago. Distances are, from Chicago, 108 miles by water and 192 by rail: from Detroit, 196 miles: from Grand Rapids, 40 miles. Among the prominent features of the city are 11 churches, viz. : Baptist, Catholic, Congregational, Danish Lutheran, 2 Dutch Reformned, Episcopal, Methodist, Norwe- gian Lutheran, Scandinavian and Univer- salist, a fine Union school building and 5 ward schools. a $45,000 court house and a $25,000 opera house. There are ? National Banks, whose combined capital is 8300 .- 000. The newspapers are the Chronicle, Republican in politics and issuing daily and weekly editions; the Journal, Repub- lican, weekly; the Mars and Reporter. Democratic. semi-weekly. and the Sentinel, a Greenback weekly. The city is lighted with gas, has the Vergennes system of water works, and its main street. Wostern avenue, has a decidedly metropolitan ap- pearance, there being several tine brick business blocks. There are about a dozen hotels, of all grades, the Hofstra, Ameri- can and Occidental, the leading ones, being well kept and well patronized; the former is the only first-class brick hotel in the city. Lumber manufacturing is, of course, the chief interest of the place. the annual product of the mills on Muskegon lake being estimated at not less than 500,- 000,000 feet. Apart from lumbering, the manufacturing interests of the city are quite extensive; and include 3 foundries and machine shops, large boiler works, a steam flour mill with 5 rum of stone, a brewery and extensive basket and fruit package manufactory, a curtain roller and window-slat manufactory, a packing box manufactory, 4 planing mills, and an es- tablishment for the manufacture of fire kindlings and hames. There are also car- riage and wagon shops. the usual number of smaller manufacturing concerns found in places of this size, and the shops of the C. & W. M. R. R. Co., all of which give employment to many hundreds of em- ployes, and disburse annually, in the form of wages, several hundred thousands of dollars. The productions of the surround- ing country are chietly grapes, strawber- ries and peaches, of which large shipments are annually made. Heary H. Holt, ex- Lieutenant Governor of the State, is in possession of a large and valuable collec tion of mineral specimens, coins and curi. osities, collected from all parts of the

world, which he has formed into a mu- seum and opened to the public. Owing to the strong current in the channel leading from Muskegon lake to lake Michigan, the water never freezes over, and affords bet- ter advantages for a winter harbor than any other port on the coast, and is deep enough for the largest vessels. Telegraph, Western Union. Express, American and United States. Mail, daily, to all points. Luther Whitney, postmaster.
