SPEED'S STATION. On the J. M. &.I. R. R., in Silver Creek township, Clark county. Cement is manufactured extensively, the production amounting to $125,000 annually. The postoffice is Sel- lersburgh.

SPENCER. The most important town in and the county seat of Owen county, is pleasantly located on White river and the I. & V. R'y, 52 miles southwest of In- dianapolis, and 64 northeast of Vincennes. It was settled in 1820, incorporated a town in 1867 and is the present location of 1,600 persons. It has a supply of excellent qual-


ity building stone, and coal is to be found in the near vicinity. Spencer carries a bonded debt of $17,000, has real and per- sonal property (assessed value) amount- ing to $638,760, and supports 5 churches, a good graded school, 1 public hall, 2 banks and 3 hotels. Of the last mentioned, the National is the best. It is centrally located and well conducted. The press is repre- sented by the Democrat, Republican and Spen- cer County Journal. Its manufactories com- prise 2 flour mills, 1 stave factory, 1 saw mill, 1 planing mill and a woolen mill. Grain, live stock, coal, staves and lumber are shipped. Ex., Adams. Tel., W. U. Joel A.
