HARTFORD CITY. Settled in 1839, is the county seat of Blackford coun- ty, located at crossing of Ft. W., C. & L. and P., C. & St. L. R'ys, 47 miles south of Fort Wayne and 72 northeast of Indian- apolis. The town is entirely free from debt and contains 1,800 inhabitants, 3 churches-Methodist, Presbyterian and Lu- theran-a graded school, 1 opera house with a seating capacity of 600, 2 hotels, 1 bank, 2 weekly newspapers-News and Tele- gram-are supported. Its manufacturing interests are quite extensive, and include 2 saw mills, a hub and spoke factory, 1 flax mill, a brick and tile factory, 1 flour mill, 1 tannery and a planing mill.
