TIPTON. The county seat of Tip- ton county, is an incorporated town of 1,800 inhabitants, located at crossing of I., P. & C. Div. W., St. L. & P. and L. E. & W. R'ys, 39 miles north of Indianapolis, and 49 east of Lafayette. The town has a bonded debt of $5,000, real and personal property (assessed value) amounting to $300,000, and supports 5 churches-Metho- dist, Presbyterian, Christian, New Light and Catholic-4 hotels, 1 bank, 1 graded school of 6 departments, and an opera house. The press is represented by 3 weekly newspapers, known as the Advocate, Times, and Saturday Express. Tipton is surrounded by an exceedingly fertile agricultural dis- . trict, from which it derives its chief sup- port. In the way of manufactories the place has a hub and heading factory, 1 flour mill, stave factory, 2 planing mills and 4 saw mills. Lumber, live stock, pro- duce and grain are the principal shipments. The place was quite a summer resort a few years ago and is still patronized to some extent, but has not improved any since 1876. Indian Springs are located 2 miles north. Popula- tion, 150.
