GOSHEN. Is an important incor- porated manufacturing city of 5,000 in- habitants, the county seat of Elkhart county, located at crossing of C., W. & M. and Air Line Div. L. S. & M. S. R. Rs, 110 miles east of Chicago, 64 northwest of Fort Wayne, 24 southeast of South Bend, and 160 north of Indianapolis. The Elkhart river flows by the city, and furnishes most excellent water power which is utilized to drive 3 flour mills, 4 furniture factories, 1 linseed oil mill, 1 woolen mill, and 1 plan-
ing mill. These with 1 stave factory, 2 saw mills, 1 foundry, 1 table factory, 1 planing mill, several pump factories, and 1 cider and wine press factory, comprise the prin- cipal manufacturing industries of the place. Prominent among the above is the extension table factory of Nash & Knox, who employ 25 hands. Goshen Pump Com- pany, the Drake & Walker Iron Pump Company, Hattel Bros. furniture factory, the linseed oil mill of J. H. Defrees & Son, and the Goshen Iron Works. The princi- pal public buildings comprise the county buildings, opera house, several handsome business blocks, 11 church edifices, and 4 school buildings. Goshen is lighted by gas, has excellent water works, a well equipped fire department, 2 opera houses, and supports 4 hotels, 3 banks and 5 news- papers-Independent, Democrat, Gospel Ban- ner, Times and the Evangelium Panier. GOSPORT. With a population of 800, is located on White river, at crossing of I. & V. and L., N., A. & C. R'ys, in Wayne township, Owen county, 7 miles northeast of Spencer, the county seat, and 44 southwest of Indianapolis. Gosport was settled in 1825, incorporated a town in 1865, and is the present location of 4 churches, a graded school, 1 hotel, a pri- vate bank, 1 flour mill, 1 stave factory and- 1 saw mill.
