It was incorporated a town in 1842, carries a bonded debt of $500 and contains 600 in- habitants. Methodist and Presbyterian churches, a graded school, 1 good hotel- the Caldwell House-1 planing mill, a saw mill, cooper shop and 1 flour mill. Liberty is a lively business place, carries a bonded debt of $5,000, and contains 5 churches-Presbyterian, Methodist, Christ- ian, Catholic and Lutheran-high and graded schools, a township library, an opera house, 2 hotels and 2 national banks. Two weekly newspapers- Union County Democrat and Liberty Herald, are sustained. It has, in the way of manufactories, 2 flour mills, a soap factory, 1 planing mill, 2 stone quarries, a cooper shop, 1 saw mill, a brick yard and an agricultural implement factory.
