SULLIVAN. The county seat of Sullivan county, is located on the E. & T. H. and S. & B. R. R's, nearly in the geo- graphical centre of the county, 26 miles south of Terre Haute and 98 southwest of Indianapolis. It dates as a settlement from 1842, and has a population of 2,500. Its public buildings are very good and comprise the court house which was erected in 1853, and remodeled and enlarged in 1871, a large graded school building, erected at a cost of · $20,000, an opera house and 5 church edi- fices. Coal of excellent quality is mined in the near vicinity. It has 3 hotels, 2 banks, 3 weekly newspapers-Times, Democrat and Union, 2 planing mills, 4 flour mills, 1 pump factory, I saw mill, 1 woolen mill and the foundry and boiler works of Whitmore Bros. Sullivan is entirely free from bonded debt and has real and personal property
