FOUNTAIN CITY. Named for- merly Newport, was settled in 1818 by Redden Chance and Solomon Thomas. It is located on the G. R. & I. R. FOWLER. This incorporated town of 1,300 inhabitants, the county seat of Benton county, is located on the C., I., St. L. & C. R'y., 28 miles northwest of Lafay- ette, and 91 northwest of Indianapolis. It has excellent county buildings, good busi- ness blocks, handsome residences, and is rapidly increasing in population and com- merce. Methodist, Christian and Presby- terian and Catholic churches, a graded school, 1 private bank, 3 hotels and 3 weekly newspapers-Republican, Benton Review and Era-are sustained. FRANKFORT. The seat of jus- tice for Clinton county, is the most impor- tant city, of like size, in northern Indiana. It contains a population of 4,500, and is surrounded by a rich and productive agri- cultural district. Its railroad facilities are excellent, and comprise four roads as fol- lows: F. & K. Div. T., C. & St. L., L., E. & W. Air Line Div. L., N. A. & C., and L. Div. T. H. & I. The city is distant from Indianapolis 50 miles, Lafayette 25- miles, Terre Haute 79 miles, and Logansport 37 miles ; has good county buildings, very sub- stantial business blocks, many fine resi- dences, a volunteer fire department, several churches, good schools, 2 banks-1 private and 1 national-an opera house, telephone exchange, and several good hotels; of the last mentioned, the Coulter House is the most prominent; it was erected at a cost of $20,000, and is a handsome building with all modern improvements. The press is represented by 3 papers; the Banner and Crescent are weekly publications, and the Christian Press is issued monthly. Frankfort has gained the reputation of be- ing the most enterprising, thrifty city in the State, and its general appearance well de-
