MICHIGAN CITY. This flour- ishing city of 8,000 inhabitants is pleas- antly located on Lake Michigan, in La-

porte county, 12 miles northwest of Laporte court house, 161 northwest of Indianapolis and 56 southeast of Chicago. It is tra- versed by the M. C., I., P. & C. Div. W., St. L. & P. and L., N. A. & C. R'ys, and has one of the finest harbors on the lake. The most important industry here is the lumber trade. During the year 1881 over 150,000,- 000 feet of lumber was handled by nine firms in the business, which makes it the most extensive lumber market in the State. In addition to this traffic the city has large commercial trade and the following manu- factories : 2 planing mills, a refrigerator factory, 1 flour mill, 1 chair factory, car works, hosiery factory, brewery, cooper shop and a carriage woodwork factory. Michigan City was laid out in 1831, incor- porated March 8, 1836, and is the pres- ent location of 10 churches, several schools, 1 academy, the Indiana Prison North, a public hall, 2 banks and 4 hotels. The assessed value of real and per- sonal property amounts to over $2,500,000. It has a bonded debt of $40,000, is lighted by gas, has good water works, a well equip- ped and efficient fire department, telephone exchange, several substantial business blocks and handsome residences. Its general ap- pearance denotes thrift and enterprise and it is undoubtedly one of the most import- ant towns of itz size in the State. The press is represented by the Dispatch (daily and weekly), and the Enterprise (weekly). Lum- ber is the principal article of export. It has Am., U. S. and L., N. A. & C. Ex. and W. U. and M. U. telegraph offices. Uriah C. Follett, postmaster.
