The village contains Methodist, Presby- terian, Baptist and Christian churches, a graded school, 2 hotels, a private bank, weekly newspaper- News-1 spoke factory, 2 large stone quarries, 2 flour mills, 1 plan- ing mill, a saw mill, and 1 woolen mill. It is located on Duck Creek, in Pike Creek township, Madi- son county, at crossing of L., E. & W. and P., C. & St. L. R'ys, 16 miles northwest of Anderson court house, and 50 northeast of Indianapolis. This town is rapidly improv- ing, both in commerce and manufacture, and contains excellent churches, a large graded school of 4 departments, a public hall, several fine business blocks, 2 hotels, 1 private bank, and a weekly newspaper- The Review. Its prominent manufactories include 3 saw mills, 1 stave factory, 1 flax mill, a cooper shop, 2 planing mills, a brick and tile yard and 1 flour mill. Tri- weekly stage to Independence and Rigdon. EVANSVILLE. The county seat of Vanderburg county, is pleasantly lo- cated on the Ohio river, 192 miles from Indianapolis, 161 from St. Louis and 250 from Louisville. This is the most import- ant manufacturing and commercial city in southern Indiana and is the second in pop- ulation, commerce and manufacture in the state. It is surrounded by a very rich ag- ricultural district, is rapidly improving in every respect and for thrift and general activity has no equal in the state. The river gives it direct water transportation with all of the river cities from Pittsburgh to New Orleans.
