KNIGHTSTOWN. This flourish- ing incorporated town of 1,850 inhabitants is pleasantly located on Blue river and the P., C. & St. L. R'y, in Wayne township, Henry county, 14 miles southwest of New- castle court house, 34 east of Indianapolis, and same distance west of Richmond. It was first platted in 1828, is entirely free from bonded debt, has good business blocks, wide, clean streets, 1 academy, 2 graded schools, 7 churches-Methodist, Presbyteri- an, Catholic, Christian, Friends, Baptist, and A. M. E .- a national bank, and 2 ho- tels. The Soldiers' Orphans' Home, a State institution, is located 1} miles south of the town. Two newspapers, the Shield and Ban- ner, are issued weekly. Blue river fur- nishes power to operate 3 flour mills, which, together with 3 planing mills, a flax bag- ging factory, 1 brick yard, 2 saw mills, 1 foundry, 2 drain tile factories, and 1 pump factory, comprise the principal manufac- tories here. Grain, live stock and flour are exported at the rate of from 65 to 70 car loads per month. Daily stage to Car- thage; fare 25 cents. Ex., Adams. Tel., W. U. John F. Bell, postmaster.

KOKOMO. The county seat of How- ard county, is an important commercial city of 5,000 inhabitants, situated on I., P .. & C. Div. W., St. L. & P., K. & F. Div. T., C. & St. L. and the P., C. & St. L. R'ys, and is distant from Indianapolis 54 miles, from Chicago 139 miles, Richmond 85 miles, and Logansport 22 miles. This is one of the most thrifty, enterprising cities of its size in the State; has good county buildings, substantial, imposing business blocks, hand- some residences, is lighted by gas, has a fire department, telephone exchange, good opera house, several churches, 1 high and 2 graded schools, 3 banks-one private and 2 national-6 hotels and 3 large grain ele- vators. The press is represented by 4 weekly newspapers, as follows: Dispatch, Gazette, Tribune and Christian Indicator. The man- ufacturing industries are not fully devel- oped as yet, but what they lack in number is somewhat balanced by their solidity and enterprise. They at present include 2 foun- dries, a stave and heading factory, 1 plan- ing mill, 2 flour mills, cooper shop, 1 ex- celsior factory, 2 saw mills, 1 furniture factory, 1 tannery, 1 pump factory and a tile factory. Lumber, grain, wool, live stock and produce comprise the principal shipments. It has stage communication with nearly all the surrounding towns not on railroad lines. The Am. and U. S. Ex. and W. U.
