It was settled in 1821, con- tains 5 churches-Methodist, Presbyterian, Baptist, Catholic and Christian-a good graded public school, 2 hotels and 2 private banks. Blue river flows through the village and furnishes power for starch, hominy, lumber and flour mills, which comprise its principal manufactories. The place has a bonded indebtedness of $4,000, supports 1 weekly newspaper-the Courier-and ex- ports grain, starch and flour.
