V. R. R., 85 miles from Indianapolis and 43 from Cincinnati. It is incorporated, carries a bonded debt of $3,600, has real and personal property (assessed value) amounting to $875,000, is lighted by gas, has a good fire department, and supports Methodist, Presbyterian, Lutheran and Catholic churches, good schools, a town hall, 5 hotels, 1 bank, and 2 weekly news- papers-Franklin Democrat and Brookville American. The river furnishes good water power, which is partially utilized to operate 2 flour mills and 1 paper mill, which, witlı a distillery, 1 saw mill, 1 brick yard, a tan- nery, 1 foundry, 2 cooper shops, 1 brewery, and a churn factory run by steam comprise its manufacturing industries.
