Prominent among last mentioned is the well known Teegarden House, which has a well earned reputation of being one of the best hotels in the State.
Its religious and educational facilities consist of 15 churches, 1 high and 6 graded schools and Holmes' Short Hand Business College which has gained a reputation for thoroughness and is a well conducted in- stitution in every respect. The city has a bonded debt of $82,000 and real and per- sonal property-assessed value-amounting to over $2,500,000. Among its recent im- provements is the new Opera House, a handsome building erected at a cost of $30,000, with a seating capacity of 1,200. Its newspapers are known as follows : Jour- nal, Argus and Herald-Chronicle, all weekly publications, which with 5 religious monthly sheets give it a strong and influ- ential press influence.
The manufacturing interests of this city are very extensive and comprise 3 flour mills, a chair factory, 1 woolen mill, 1 furniture factory, 2 foundries, wheel works, a pump factory, tannery, 2 cooper shops, 1 brewery, water wheel works, ma- chine shops, plow factory, a carriage wood work factory, and the extensive foundry and works of M. & J. Rumley. These es- tablishments are gaining a reputation over the United States that at once advertises Laporte as a first class manufacturing city. There is a daily stage route from here to Hatch's Mills and Heston, and a semi- weekly route to Three Oaks, Mich. The W. U. Tel. and U. S. Ex. Companies have offices here. Samuel A. LARWILL. This prosperous village of 500 inhabitants is located on the P., Ft. W. & C. R'y, in Richland township, Whit- ley county, 10 miles northwest of Columbia City, the county seat and banking town, and 26 northwest of Ft. Wayne. R., in Lau- rel township, Franklin county, 15 miles northwest of Brookville, the county seat, 12 miles south of Connersville, the loca- tion of nearest bank, and 57 northwest of Cincinnati. This is the location of 1,000 persons, 4 churches-Catholic, Methodist, Lutheran, and Protestant Methodist-a gra- ded school, of 5 departments, 1 hotel, and a weekly newspaper - The Review. The most important feature of this place is its large deposits of first quality building stone, which is extensively quarried and adds greatly to the wealth of the town. Its manufactories comprise 2 foundries, a pa- per pulp mill, 2 cooper shops, 1 flour mill, 1 saw mill, and a beef and pork packing house. Stone is the principal shipment. The city is lighted by gas, has a bonded debt of $71,300, 8 churches, 3 graded schools, 2 banks, 7 hotels, 2 weekly news- papers- Register and Press-and good coun- ty buildings and business blocks. This is an important manufacturing city, ranking among the first of its size in the State.
