WASHINGTON. This flourishing city, the county seat of Daviess county, is located on the O. & M. R'y, 19 miles east of Vincennes, 136 southwest of In- dianapolis, 168 west of Cincinnati, and
172 east of St. Louis. Washington was settled in 1817, and soon thereafter was made the county seat. It was incorporated a city in 1875, and is now a thrifty busi- ness place, containing excellent county buildings, good business blocks, 2 banks, 4 hotels, 7 churches, graded and high schools, 1 opera house, a good fire department, water works, and is lighted by gas. Two newspapers-Gazette (daily and weekly) and the Daviess County Democrat-are pub- lished here. The manufacturing industries of Washington are not very well developed" as yet. It has now 4 flour mills, 1 cooper shop, 2 saw mills and 2 founderies. Coal of a very good quality is mined, and that, together with grain and live stock, form its chief exports. Population 4,000.
