COLUMBIA CITY. This import- ant town of 2,600 inhabitants, the county seat of Whitley county, is pleasantly lo- cated on Blue River at crossing of Eel River Div. W., St. L. & P. and P., Ft. W. & C. R'ys, 18 miles northwest of Fort Wayne and 63 northeast of Logansport. The city has good county buildings, wide streets, handsome residences, is lighted by gas, has a well equipped fire department, and sup- ports 10 churches of popular religious de- nominations, 1 graded and 1 high school, an opera house, 2 private banks, 3 hotels and 3 weekly newspapers-Commercial, Post and Herald. It carries a bonded debt of $8,500, and is situated in the midst of a fertile, productive agricultural country. Prominent among its factories, mills, etc., are 7 saw mills, 2 drain tile factories, 1 flour mill, a tannery, 2 woolen mills, 1 hub factory, 2 broom factories, 1 brewery and a furniture factory. Its chief exports con- sist of grain, produce, flax seed and lum- ber. Tri-weekly stage to Cromwell ; fare $1 50. It has Adams, and Pacific Ex., and Tel., W. U. Orson H. Woodworth, post- master.
