MADISON. Is an important manu- facturing and commercial city of 9,000 in- habitants, pleasantly located on the Ohio river at the southern terminus of the J., M. & I. R. R., 86 miles southeast of Indiana- polis and 100 below Cincinnati. This is the oldest city in southeastern Indiana, and is a steady growing, enterprising town. It is lighted by gas, has good water works, an efficient fire department, good police force, several miles of street railway, churches of all popular religious denominations, 6 graded schools, the Academy of Our Lady of Angels, and a public library. The as- sessed value of its real and personal prop- erty is over $4,000,000, and it has a bonded debt of $208,000. The public buildings are very substantial and residences quite hand- some. There are supported 8 hotels, 2 na- tional banks, and 5 newspapers. The last mentioned are known as follows: The Star and Courier, dailies, and the Herald, Star and Courier which are issued weekly. The manufactories here are rapidly increasing both in size and number and are reckoned as among the most substantial in the State. Prominent among its manufactured goods are packing boxes, copper goods, spokes, staves, heading, boats, starch, sash, doors and blinds, paper, soda fountains, blacking, furniture, woolen goods, beer, stirrups, brass goods, wheels, mineral water, boilers, chairs, brick, drain tile, hosiery, iron, ear drums, flour, barrels, lumber, canned goods, sad- dle trees, horse collars and leather. Madi- son is destined to become one of the most important river towns in the State, as has most excellent transportation facilities and good location. Ex., Adams. Tel., W. U. John W.
