MOUNT VERNON. Is the county seat of Posey county, pleasantly located on the Ohio river and St. L. Div. L. & N. R. R., 19 miles west of Evansville and 160 southwest of Indianapolis. This, for its size, is probably the most thrifty, energetic place in southern Indiana. It is a hand- some incorporated city of 4,500 inhabitants, has a bonded debt of $50,000, 5 churches- Methodist, Presbyterian, Lutheran, Cath- olic and Baptist -- 1 high and 2 graded schools, 3 hotels, 2 banks, very substantial business blocks and handsome county build- ings. Of the last mentioned the court house

cost $112,000 and the jail $25,000. The surrounding country is very fertile, and this being the county seat it receives sup- port from nearly the entire county, which is one of the most productive in the State. Four weekly newspapers are sustained, and are known as the Posey County Republican, Western Star, The Sun, and Mount Vernon Democrat. The last mentioned is the offi- cial democratic organ of Posey county. It is a well established and ably edited paper with a large circulation. The manufactur- ing interests are represented by 3 flour mills, a machine shop, 1 tannery, 3 brick yards, 1 hominy mill, 1 cooper shop, a pump factory, and 1 saw mill.
