LAPORTE. The county seat of La- porte county, is located at crossing of L. S. i& M. S. and I., P. & C. Div. W., St. L. & P. R'ys, 148 miles northwest of Indiana- polis, 59 southeast of Chicago, and 12 south- east of Michigan City. Laporte is an in- corporated city of 7,500 inhabitants, sur- rounded by a fertile agricultural district, and is one of the most thrifty growing towns in Northern Indiana. Its broad, streets are lighted by gas; it has excel- lent water works, 6 volunteer fire com- panies, 2 opera houses with a combined seat- ing capacity of 1,800, 4 banks, and 3 hotels.
