ELKHART. One of the most im- portant manufacturing and commercial places in Northern Indiana, is a progressive incorporated city of 10,000 inhabitants, pleasantly located on the St. Joseph and Elkhart rivers, in Concord township, Elk- hart county, 10 miles northwest of Goshen, the county seat, 101 east of Chicago, 60 northwest of Ft. Wayne, and 150 northeast of Indianapolis. It is traversed by the L. S. & M. S. and C. W. & M. R'ys., and is a very important station for both roads. The city is lighted by gas ; has excellent works ; a good and well equipped fire depart- ment; has real and personal property (assessed value) amounting to $2,250,- 000, and carries a bonded debt of $10,- 000. Its educational and religious ad- vantages are most excellent, and comprise 1 high and 5 ward schools, employing 24 teachers, with an enrollment of 1,400 scholars, and several very handsome church edifices, belonging to nearly all kinds of prominent religious societies. The city supports 7 hotels, 3 banks and 5 news- papers-Monitor and Review, published daily and weekly, and Elkhart County Journal, issued weekly. The most import- ant feature of Elkhart is its extensive manufactories, which include 4 paper mills, 2 straw board mills, 2 knit goods
factories, a band instrument factory, 3 planing mills, 2 wind mill factories, 1 saw mill, 2 starch factories, 2 foundries, car works, 5 flour mills and 2 box factories. A large portion of the mills and factories de- · rive water power from rivers above men- tioned.
