COLUMBUS. The county seat of Bartholomew county, is a flourishing in- corporated city of 5,500 inhabitants, located on the main line of the J., M. & I. R. R., at its junction with the Madison and Rush- ville branches, 41 miles south of Indian- apolis and 69 north of Louisville. It is surrounded by probably the most fertile agricultural district in the State. Nearly the entire county is under a very high state of cultivation, and in the growth of wheat it has no superior in Indiana. Haw and Flat Rock creeks both empty into White river at or near the city. Columbus is a handsomely laid out city, noted for its ex- cellent county buildings, substantial busi- ness blocks and handsome residences. It is lighted by gas, has good water works and a well organized fire department. The city supports 6 hotels, 2 banks, an opera house, several churches, 2 graded schools and 2 newspapers-Democrat and Republican-both are issued both daily and weekly. Its manu- facturing interests, while not very numer- ous, are quite substantial and add greatly to the wealth of the city. They consist of 3 flour mills, carriage factory, 2 planing mills, 1 foundry, furniture factory, tannery, brewery, starch factory, hominy mills and 1 stave and heading factory. CONNERSVILLE. The county seat of Fayette county, is an incorporated city of 4000 inhabitants, pleasantly located on White Water river, 58 miles southeast of Indianapolis, 67 northwest of Cincinnati and 20 southwest of Richmond. This is probably the handsomest town in the state. It contains many fine residences, good busi- ness blocks, wide streets, beautifully lined with shade trees and has every appearance of a thrifty, enterprising place. The bonded debt amounts to $11,000. It is well lighted by gas, has good water works, a well equip- ped fire department, 1 opera house, 6 churches, high and graded schools, 1 private and 1 national bank, 2 hotels and 2 weekly newspapers-Examiner and Times. Promi- nent among its manufacturing establish- ments are 3 large furniture factories, a planing mill, hosiery factory, 2 saw mills, 2 machine shops, a pump factory, 2 cooper shops, 1 broom factory, a brewery, 2 flour mills, 1 cigar box factory and silver plating works. A portion of above mentioned de- rive power from White river. Its trans- portation facilities consist of 3 railroads- W. W., C. H. & I. and Ft. W., C. & L., and these, with its excellent water power and eligible location, gives it unusual ad- vantages for all kinds of manufacture. Furniture and grain are the chief exports. Ex., U. S. and Am.
