PLAINFIELD. This pleasant vil- lage of 1,000. inhabitants is located on White Lick creek, and St. L., V., T. H. & I. R. R., in Guilford township, Hendricks county, 9} miles southeast of Danville court house, and 14 west of Indianapolis. Plain- field was settled in 1836, and is the location of the Indiana State Reform School, con- taining 350 boys, the county orphans' home, with 42 children, a good academy, 1 graded school, 6 churches, 1 hotel, 1 bank, 2 saw mills and 1 flour mill: One weekly news- paper-The Progress-is sustained. PLYMOUTH. This handsome in- corporated city of 3,000' inhabitants, the county seat of Marshall county, is located at crossing of I., P. & C. Div. W., St. L. & P., and P., Ft. W. & C. R'ys, 85 miles south- east of Chicago, and 118 north of Indian- apolis. It was settled in 1835, and has a bonded debt of $12,000, very good county buildings, 6 churches, a graded school, the St. Michael's Academy-a branch of the St. Mary's, of Notre Dame-1 opera house, telephone exchange, volunteer fire depart- ment, 2 banks and 5 hotels. The water supply here is unexcelled, and is obtained from two large flowing wells, the waters of
which contain very excellent magnetic me- dicinal properties. The press is represented by the Republican and Democrat, both week- ly publications. The manufacturing inter- ests here are not fully developed as yet. They now comprise 2 flour mills, 1 brew- ery, 2 planing mills, 1 plow factory, 1 tan- nery and 1 cooper shop. Stage to Maxin- cukee and Marmount. Lumber and grain are extensively shipped. Ex., U. S. and Adams. Tel., W. U. W. M. Kendall, postmaster.
