WABASH. This important manu- facturing city, the county seat of Wabash county, is situated on the Wabash river, in one of the most fertile agricultural regions to be found in the State, as bottom lands of the Wabash, Mississincwa, Ecl and Sala- monie rivers-which flow through the country-are widely known as being ex- ceedingly rich and productive. The princi- pal business blocks and county buildings are built of stone, quarried in the county, which is very excellent and extensively used throughout the State. The court house erected in 1879 is a model of archi- * tectural beauty, and standing as it does on the summit of a high hill, in the heart of the city, adds very much to its appearance. Its dome has a large electric light, which can be seen for miles. This city was probably the first one in the United States to try the experiment of light- ing the streets by electricity, which has been demonstrated to be a success. The city is incorporated, and is located at crossing of W., St. L. & P. and C. W. & M. R'ys. The last mentiened have extensive machine shops here. It has several very handsome churches, good schools, 3 banks, and 4 hotels. Prominent among the latter is the new Lutz Hotel, which has the repu- tation of being first class in every respect. Two weekly newspapers-the Courier and Plain Dealer-are sustained. Wabash as a manufacturing town ranks among the fore- most in the State, numbering among its mills, factories, etc., 2 saw mills, 2 foun- dries, 1 stave factory, 1 woolen mill, 1 school furniture factory, 2 flour mills, 1 plow factory, 1 planing mill, 1 hub and spoke factory, 1 cooper shop, and 1 wash- ing machine factory.
