CUSHMAN.


I. ROBERT1 CUSHMAN was b. in England, about 1580 to 1585. He is supposed to have been one of those who started upon the Mayflower, but returned to London in the Speedwell. II. THOMAS2 CUSHMAN, son of the preceding, was b. in England, Feb. 1608. He came over with his father in the Fortune and was left in the family of Gov. Bradford, who reared him. He m. Mary Allerton, celebrated in history as " Mrs. Mary Cushman, the last survivor of the May- flower passengers." Her descendants have erected an imposing monument at her grave in the cemetery of Plymouth, Mass., called Burial Hill. III. THOMAS3

1. REV. JOB7 CUSHMAN, son of James6, VI., was b. at Kingston, Mass., Jan. 17, 1797 ; d. at Grinnell, Iowa, Aug. 5, 1878. He m., Apr. 16, 1833, Clarissa Abbott of Wendell, Mass. We have not the particulars of her birth, death, and parentage. He had no children. He was the acting pastor of the Sullivan First Cong. Church, after the retirement of Mr. Peabody, from Apr. 1, 1830, for two years. See page 413 for a fuller account of his personal life and ministry. He was not married while in town. He boarded at Dea. Selim Frost's, who lived at 108. As he only paid for the meals which he ate at Mr. Frost's, he did so much " visiting" that his board was very cheap. He kept a horse and went from house to house in a saddle.


CUTLER.


GEORGE ALBERT? CUTLER was b. in Templeton, Mass., in 1857, son of George Albert1 and Eliza A. (Smith) Cutler. He m. Harriet Janet Stone, b. in Warwick, Mass., dau. of Elliot P. and Caroline A. (Gould) Stone. They r. in S., at 119, from Feb. to May, in 1904. Their only ch., then unm., who was employed by Haskell in a portable steam mill, was George Albert3, b. in Athol, Mass., July 11, 1878.


DAMON.


1. CHARLES1 DAMON and his wife, Lucretia, were in town from about. 1803-04 until 1806-07, the exact limits of coming and going not being ascertained. It is not positively known where they lived, but it is supposed that he carried on a store at 97 and lived there. While stopping in town a child, Martha 2 (called Patty) was b., Aug. 29, 1804. A child of his also died, Mar. 28, 1806. It was very likely the same " Patty." His name is variously spelled upon the records as DAMMON, DEMMON, and in other ways.


DANE.


1. THOMAS WASHINGTONI DANE m., Oct. 21, 1883, Almira Gibbs. We have not ascertained their birthplaces, birthdays, or parentage. They lived in S., in 1899-1900, in the old Lovisa Kingsbury house, at 117, which was demolished in September 1909. They had five ch .: 1. Mary Louisa2, b. in North Brookfield, Mass., Sept. 1, 1887 ; 2. Charles Arthur2, b. in East Brookfield, Mass., July 31, 1891 ; 3. Viola May Rena2, b. in Belchertown, Mass., Mar. 18, 1895 ; 4. George Rufus 2, b. in Belchertown, Mass., Apr. 22, 1897 ; d. at the Elliot City Hospital in Keene, Mar. 26, 1900, from the effects of being burned (see page 370) ; 5. Henry Thomas2, b. in East Swanzey, N. H., Sept. 10, 1898. Mr. Dane was employed in the Wilcox steam saw-mill, at 42. His wife deserted her family shortly before the tragic death of little George Rufus.

I. JAMES1 DAVIS, who, with his brother Solomon, was in the " siege of Boston," is believed, from allusions in family letters, to be the same as James Davis of Taunton, Mass., later of Sharon, Vt.

JAMES2 DAVIS, son of James, I., of whose parentage we know no . more, and of whose birth and death we have not the facts, came to S., in 1794 . and settled at 221, where no other family has ever lived. In 1797 or 1798, he ran away from S .; returned in 1799; then, after a short sojourn, he ran away again, which was the last known of him. His family remained at 221 until 1804, then went to Pratt's Hollow, N. Y .; returned later, and soon moved to Gilsum. He was published, May 13, 1792, as of Winchester, N. H., to Betsey Nash of Shutesbury, Mass., b. in Taunton, Mass., May 23, 1774; d. in Gilsum, Dec. 24, 1853; dau. of Abraham, Sr., and Lydia (Smith) Nash. There were four ch. : 1. 2. JOHN3 DAVIS, son of James2, 1, m., Nov. 16, 1813, Martha Phillips, b. in Fitzwilliam, Nov. 5, 1795 ; d. in Gilsum, Apr. 24, 1881 ; dau. of Nathaniel and Mary (Bailey) Phillips. He d. in Gilsum, two days before his wife, Apr. 22, 1881. He was, in many ways, quite a remarkable man. He was a mechani- cal genius. He made a stringed musical instrument resembling a piano. SAMUEL2 DAVIS, his son, m. Mary Meadows, and lived in Bedford, Mass. III. DANIEL3 DAVIS, his son, m. Mary Hubbard and also lived in Bedford. IV. NATHAN4 DAVIS, his son, m .. Ellen Hubbard and lived in Rutland, Mass.' V. ALPHEUS DAVIS, his son, moved from Rutland, Mass., to the west side of Packersfield (Nelson), N. H., near the Sullivan line, at 59 on the map. VI. TILLY M6. DAVIS, his son, m. Catherine Morse, and lived many years near his father, at 60 (in Nelson).

ZECHARIAH+ DAVIS, his son, b. in Concord, Mass., May 31, 1715 ; m., Mar. 28, 1743, Lydia Hubbard, b. in Concord, Mass., Apr. 6, 1722. We have not learned the places and dates of their deaths. They had eleven ch., among whom was Ruth5, who m. John Farrar, q. v., who lived in S., at 183. She d. there. V. ELISHA5 DAVIS, his son, b. in Concord, Mass., Aug. 22, 1747 ; d. in Stoddard, Apr. 12, 1815. He m. Olive Whittemore, dau. of Samuel Whittemore of New Ipswich. She d. in Stoddard, Sept. 23, 1842. He came to Stoddard, with his father, in 1797, and settled, with his father, on the farm where Marcus Davis died, next place east of 66 (Stoddard number) on the map. They had eight ch .: 1. 2. ASA7 DAVIS, JR., son of Asa6, VI., d. in East S., at 36, Oct. 20, 1898. He m., Nov. 28, 1843, Sophronia Gould; b. in Stoddard, Nov. 24, 1820; d. in East S., at 36, June 12, 1895; dau. of Isaiah and Susan (Joslin) Gould. He lived at first on the homestead farm in Stoddard, then on the so-called Heman Jenkins farm, and later in the house near the "bog " schoolhouse. Late in life, he moved to East S., with his wife, to 36, where both died. Five ch., all b. in Stoddard : I. Rosabelle Susan8, b., Oct. 24, 1845 ; m. Hon. D. W. Rugg, q. v .; 2. 3. ALDEN7 DAVIS, son of Asa6, VI., b. in Stoddard, Jan. 20, 1818; d. in Washington, N. H., Jan. 9, 1896 ; m., June 5, 1845, Hannah E. Upton, b. in Stod- dard, June 5, 1821 ; d. in Washington, N. H., Aug. 24, 1888 ; dau. of Samuel and Lucy (Towne) Upton. One son, Samuel Upton 8, was b. in Stoddard, Apr. 9, 1846, who r., unm., in Washington, N. H. Mr. Davis lived in S., about 1841-2, at 235. He lived, afterwards, a short time at 101. Washington town records err in name of mother of Mrs. Davis.


4. HENRY& DAVIS, son of Marcus7, m., Nov. 17, 1864, Emily Sophia Rugg, b. in S., June 18, 1846 ; living in 1909; dau. of Martin and Lucinda (Bever- stock) Rugg. They lived a few years at 59, but moved, in 1877, to the Charles Mason house at 6. One son, Leston Francis9, 7, b. in S., at 6, Apr. 7, 1877.
