He has been with leading firms of architects in Boston and New York, and, since 1907, with McKim, Mead, and White, in charge of the preparation of the plans for the great Municipal Building in the City of New York. He res. in Keene, where, for many years, he has owned and operated a hack and public automobile business.
25. LAURA MARIA6 NIMS, dau. of Matthew5, 7, d. in Keene, Aug. I, 1872. She m. in Roxbury, by Rev. E. Adams, Sept. 4, 1845, Rev. Luther Townsend, b. in Fitzwilliam, Aug. 12, 1813; d. there, Feb. 9, 1862; son cf Aaron and Sylvene (Davidson) Townsend. The date of her death here given corrects the History of Fitzwilliam. Mr. Townsend gr. at Dartmouth College in 1839, and at Andover Theol. Seminary in 1842; was ordained at Troy, N. H., in the Trinitarian Cong. Ch., March 5, 1845, where he remained fifteen years. After this, he preached a short time in Loudon, then lived a few years in Fitzwilliam, where he died of tuberculosis. They had no ch., but adopted one whom they named Mariana, who was b., Jan. 12, 1854.
26. RUFUS FRANKLIN6 NIMS, son of Matthew5, 7, was a farmer in Newport, Roxbury, Nelson, and Rindge. He d. in Rindge, Feb. 23, 1857. He m., Nov. 1, 1849, Abbie Adams Farwell, b. in Roxbury, June 9, 1819 ; d. in Castleton, Ill., Apr. 7, 1907; dau. of Samuel and Mary (Adams) Farwell, later of Nelson. 29. LANMON6 NIMS (originally named James Lanmon), son of Asahel5, Jr., 9, was of the firm of Nims, Whitney & Co., sash, door and blind manufacturers in Keene, where he d., Sept. 20, 1887. For an extended account of him, see pages 618 and 619 of this history. He learned the carpenter's trade of Dexter Spaulding of Sullivan, and worked at this trade in Sullivan, Peterborough, and Swanzey., In 1836, he purchased the saw and grist-mill at East Sullivan, and built the second house in that village, at 36, where Mr. Harris lives in 1913, formerly the home of Dea. A. E. Wilson. In 1838, he moved to what was afterwards the Nahum Wright place, in the north part of Keene, and operated a saw-mill and engaged in the lumber business. In 1849, he moved to the vil- lage (now the city) of Keene. In 1849, he began business on Mechanic St. in Keene. He had different partners at different times. The firm was known by several designations, suffered several times by fires, and underwent many changes, until it was established as Nims, Whitney & Co., under which firm name it still exists. He was a man of good business ability and acquired a competency and died honored and respected. For a fuller account of him, see the reference above given. He m. He m. 2d, Oct. 28, 1851, Elizabeth Hosking, b. at St. Anstell, Cornwall, England, Dec. 11, 1826; d. in Keene, Oct. 13, 1906; dau. of William and Betsey (Daniels) Hosking. Mr. Nims had eleven ch. :
I. SAMUEL7 NIMS, b. in S., at 36, Dec. 3, 1837; d. in Keene, Aug. 18, 1886; m., March 7, 1866, in Newport, N. H., by Col. Ira McL. Barton, to Maria Adelaide Chase, b. in Nelson, Aug. 27, 1846; dau. of Loren H. and Mary (Burpee) Chase, then of Newport. Mr. Nims learned the trade of a druggist. He was afterwards a mail-route agent for many years; also the city clerk of Keene. While serving in the latter capacity, he compiled a list of the deaths in Keene, and did much to perfect the vital records. He was a genial man, remarkably well liked by all who knew him.
