1. BENJAMIN2 HANCOCK was b. in Surry, Aug. 16, 1782. He lived in S., Shrewsbury, Vt .; Chittenden, Vt.,; Selina, N. Y .; Cicero, N. Y .; and Clay, N. Y. He was probably the son of Asa1 and Abigail Hancock, who moved from Wrentham, Mass., to Surry, N. H., about the year 1778. He was m., June 29, 1805, in Dublin (now Harrisville), by Rev. Elijah Willard, to Lucretia Proctor, b. in Groton, Mass., Apr. 28, 1788; d. in Cicero, N. Y., Sept. 17, 1825 ; dau. of Phillip and Hannah (Locke) Proctor of S., who lived on the site of 252, where it is most likely that Mr. Hancock lived while in S., and where his first child was born and died and where the second child and the third child were born. The births of the other ch. are taken from family registers, and places of births, &c., are not generally given. We have not discovered the place and date of Mr. Hancock's death. He was 22 at his marriage, July 3, 1878, to Nellie Josephine Culverhouse Nash, an adopted dau. of Jacob Nash, whom his second wife, Elizabeth Culverhouse brought to him. Nellie's birthplace was given as Weymouth, Mass., and her birth date was said to be May 27, 1862. She was divorced and m., 2d, in Gilsum, Mar. 12, 1889, by Rev. F. B. Phelps, to Henry Wilder Elliott, b. in Stoddard, Sept. 23, 1863; son of Dixon and Ann (Wright) Elliott. They were divorced, and she m., 3d, Feb. 7, 1894, Elijah J. THOMAS HARDY, b. in Dublin, Feb. 22, 1821 ; m., Nov. 4, 1847, Annis Willard, b. in Dublin, Mar. 9, 1825; dau. of Levi and Irene (Knight) Willard, and grand-daughter of Rev. Elijah Willard, for many years the Baptist clergyman of Pottersville.
1. GRACE4 HARDY, dau. of Thomas3 and Annis (Willard) Hardy, was b. in Dublin, July 10, 1864. She was adopted into the family of Ira Prentice Smith and took the name of Grace Smith. She was educated at Cushing Academy in Ashburnham, Mass., graduating in 1890, correcting the statement inadvertently made on page 610. She was a good schoolteacher and died, at East S., at 34, Oct. 18, 1891. Mrs. Smith had become the second wife of Caleb Goodnow, at whose home Grace died.

I. NOAH] HARDY of Packersfield (Nelson) was m. in Townsend, Mass., Feb. 1, 1787, to Sarah Spofford of that town. II. NOAH2 HARDY, JR., m. Jerusha Kimball and lived in different places in Nelson, at one time near the schoolhouse just south of the Henry D. Taylor cottage.

FRANKLIN BULLARD3 HARDY, son of Noah2 and Jerusha, was b. in Nelson, Apr. 28, 1829; m., Sept. 30, 1852, Emily Christiana Jenkins, b. in Stoddard, Aug. 13, 1833; d. at East S., at 34, Mar. 23, 1908; dau. of Abijah and Mary (Wilson) Jenkins. They res. at Munsonville; Lowell, Mass. ; Keene ; and East S., at 34. He bought the last named house in 1897, and is still living there (1910). IIe is a mechanic and farmer. They had two ch .: I. HARMON.
JOHN HARMON, a laboring man of Irish lineage, lived a short time in the Dea. Wilson house, at 36. We have not learned the name of his wife, He had four ch. in S .: 1. Mary A., who had been m. to James O'Roarke (or O'Rourke), a blacksmith of Keene, but was not then living with him ; 2. Wil- liam ; 3. Eugene; 4. Annie, who taught school a few days in the third district, but did not retain her position in consequence of certain complications which arose. Possibly the order of births here given is not correct. There was no birth, death, or marriage in the family while they lived in Sullivan.

Mr. Haskell lived in the Martin Rugg house, at 59, in 1904, and operated a steam saw-mill which had been erected to saw the lumber on the Charles Franklin Wilson farm, then owned by Mr. Giffin. 1. BENJAMIN2 HASTINGS, JR., son of Benjamin1 and Abigail Hast- ings, was b. in Bolton, Mass., about 1763. In 1806, he purchased the farm in S., whose house was then at 142. He owned much land which he sold to his sons, Abijah and William, afterwards. He lived with Abijah at 142 (later in the new house at 141), and d., at the house of his son, William, at 147, Nov. 9, 1845, ae. 82. The author of this volume was carried to the funeral service in his mother's arms, being the first funeral that he ever attended, being then a babe of seven months. Mr. Hastings was a soldier of the Revolution, being only a boy when he enlisted. He m., July 30, 1782, in Lancaster, Mass., by Josiah Wilder, Esq., to Experience Ball, b. in Bolton, Mass., Apr. 3, 1764; d. in S., at 142, Oct. 13, 1828; dau. of Nathan and Lucy Ball. We have not been able to discover the family register. The old Bible was in the house of Abijah Hastings, but it disappeared after the latter's death, and has not been found. We know of nine ch., and there are said to have been three more that died young, making twelve in all. They were all b. in Bolton, Mass. : I. Lucy3, 2, b. Feb. 26, 1783; 2. Lucretia3, 5, b. ab. 1796; 8. Benjamin3, b. ab. 1797; drowned in Still River, Lancaster, Mass., July 4, 1813, ae. 16; 9. Hannah 3, m. George Graves, q. v .; 10. Abijah 3, 6, b., Nov. 24, 1801 ; II. 4 ch.3, whose name is not recovered ; 12. William3, 7, b., Aug. 8, 1805.
2. LUCY3 HASTINGS, dau. of Benjamin2, Jr., 1, m., in 1803, John Foster, b. in Andover, Mass., Mar. 3, 1770; drowned at Henniker, Apr. 13, r846, in a flume, while at work on a dam. He was the son of Obadiah and Hannah (Ballard) Foster. He had been previously m. to Mary Toothaker of Billerica, Mass., by whom he had two ch., Hon. Herman4 Foster of Manchester, who was president of the N. H. Senate, and Sabra4 Foster, who m. Dr. Isaac Tewksbury of Hampstead. Lucy was burned to death at Warner, Sept. 10, 1842. She had the habit, not uncommon among women of that day, of smoking a pipe. While sitting upon the hearth, smoking, her clothes caught fire from her pipe, which had fallen into her lap when she was asleep, and she was fatally burned. Mr. Foster was m. a third time to Mrs. Sarah Morse Couch of Boscawen, who died, Jan. 24, 1866. Lucy had six ch. : 1. Charles4, b. in Tewks- bury, Mass., May 11, 1804; d. in Charlestown, Mass., Jan. 19, 1850; m., Jan. 14, 1827, Ann Evans, a native of Rochester, N. H. He had two ch., Martha Ann5 and Benjamin Hastings5, both of whom are dead. His wife d. in Charlestown, Mass., Nov. 9, 1851. 2. Mary Jane4, b. in Tewksbury, Mass., Nov. 17, 1808; d. there, Nov. 1, 1809. 3. John H.4, b. in Nottingham West (now Hudson) Dec. 7, 18II ; d. there, Apr. 26, 1818. 4. Emily4, b. in Nottingham West (Hudson), Aug. 25, 1813; died long since ; m., Mar. 8, 1838, Ebenezer Sargent Badger of Warner, N. H. She had several ch. 5. in 1836. In 1839, he began a mercantile business with Horace B. Taylor, under the firm name of " Foster & Taylor," which continued until Mr. Foster died. He was very successful and acquired a large fortune. He attended the Arlington St. Church in Boston, formerly the church of which Dr. Channing was the pastor. Mr. Foster gave to the city of Boston the magnificent statue of William Ellery Channing that stands on the Public Garden, immediately opposite the Arlington St. Church. He m., July 4, 1843, Harriet Sanford of Boston, who d., Feb. 20, 1885; dau. of Samuel Sanford. 3. THOMAS3 HASTINGS, son of Benjamin2, Jr., 1, m., Mar. 23, 1809, Susannah Allen, b. in Lancaster, Mass., Oct. 14, 1788; d. at Fitchburg, Mass., Nov. 3, 1873; dau. of Samuel and Lucy (Smith) Allen. He was a farmer, and was drowned in Still River, in Lancaster, Mass., July 4, 1813, his younger brother Benjamin being drowned at the same time. Their bodies were buried on the following day in one grave, the funeral being in the First Church of Lancaster (now the Unitarian). There were two ch .: I. Emery4, 8, b. in Lan- caster, Mass., Sept. 30, 1809; 2. Sampson Wilder4, b. in S., at 142, Aug 24, 18II ; d. in Boston, Mass., at the house of Wm. C. Taintor, 13 Derne St., where he was employed, Aug. 16, 1840. Mrs. Thomas Hastings m. 2d, Mar. 18, 1818, Nathan Derby Barker, b. in Marlborough, N. 11. THOMAS A.4 HASTINGS, son of William3, 7, m., Feb, 6, 1878, Ida Pamelia Hale, b. in Littleton, Mass., June 30, 1857 ; dau. of Cummings and Pamelia Calista (Colburn) Hale. He is the proprietor of the lumber mill at East Sullivan, at 13, which has been one of the most important business estab- lishments the town has ever had. Mr. Hastings has purchased vast tracts of timber land and, since he owned the mill, has sawed an immense amount of lum- ber, giving employment to many men, which has supported many families. He is a man of kindly and benevolent feelings and has been a friend to many poor persons. He has had an interesting family of nine children, all living and in good health. 13. WILLIAM BENJAMIN4 HASTINGS, son of William3, 7, lived at East S., at 19 and 7. He died at the latter house, Apr. 27, 1894. He had been employed by his brother at the saw-mill. He m., May 4, 1887, Gertrude Susan McClure, b. in Stoddard, June 15, 1868; still living ; dau. of John and Hannah Robb (Upton) McClure. They had one son, Leon Wesley5, b. in S., at 19, Apr. 20, 1890, who is still unm., in 1910.
