6. NATHANIEL P.7 MASON, son of Nathaniel6, 1, operated for a time the saw and grist mill now owned by T. A. Hastings at East S., living in the homestead at 14, from 1841-1843; then operated the so-called Chandler saw mill in Stoddard. He had a high regard for education, which he developed even late in life. He gave his sons a good education and their brilliant success in life will be a grateful reward for his care to do so. 1. JOSEPH6 MASON, son of Joseph5, V., and Anne (Prentice) Mason, was b. in Dublin (now Harrisville), Dec. 3, 1781 ; d. in S., at 50, Mar. 8, 1860. He was a farmer and also a good cooper. He made many of the sap buckets which were used many years in Sullivan. They were large and heavy as com- pared with modern sap pails, but were very substantial and durable. He was a natural musician and a good performer upon the clarinet. His descendants were quite musical. He m., June 5, 1804, Arethusa French of Marlborough, b. in Chelmsford, Mass., Sept. 14, 1778 ; d. in Keene, Dec. 30, 1866 ; dau. of Joseph and Ruth (Farrar) French. He came to S., in 1805, and lived a time at 4, south of where Henry Davis now lives. In March 1806, he moved into the house at 50 which still stands, but out of repair. At a subsequent period, he built a two-story addition to this house, which was afterwards removed to Keene, and finally burned. He had four ch. : 1. Alonzo7, 2, b. in S., at 4, Oct. 21, 1805; 2. 2. ALONZO MASON, son of Joseph6, 1, lived many years in S., from 1833 to nearly 1850, upon the farm at 3. He was a schoolmaster of much merit in his day, a capable inan, who settled estates and did much important business. His last years were passed in Fitchburg, Mass., where he d., Sept. 6, 1892. He m., July 2, 1835, Arvilla Stone, b. in Marlborough, Jan. II, 1812; d. in Worces- ter, Mass., June 25, 1862 ; dau. of Shubael and Polly (Rogers) Stone. 3. ASHLEY? MASON, son of Joseph6, 1, lived until late in his life upon the old homestead in S., at 50. He was a farmer and musician. He played a copper bugle in the old militia company. He moved the large part of his Sulli- van house to Keene and rebuilt it. He d. in Keene, Nov. 4, 1880. He m., Ist, Nov, 24, 1831, Jemima Fisk of Holliston, Mass .; b. there, June 14, 1809; d. in S,, at 50, Feb. 1, 1835; dau. of Levi and Jemima (Underwood) Fisk. 4. SYLVESTER7 MASON, son of Joseph6, 1, had a turning mill at 52 in S. He turned hoe handles and some other articles. He operated this mill about five years from 1839. He bought the site of 53 in 1839, and built the house now standing there, where Mr. Currier lives. About 1844, he moved to Gardner, Mass. He m., June 24, 1841, Laurenza Felt of S., b. in Nelson, Nov. 2, 1817 ; d. at South Gardner, Mass., Aug. 21, 1893; dau. of Joseph and Relief [called " Lefy "] (Woods) Felt. He res. in Troy, Keene, West Concord, Concord, Roxbury, S., and finally in Keene. He lived in S., 1877-1880. in the old Roswell Osgood house, at 247, now the summer home of Sidney A. Nims. On Dec. 24, 1889, while engaged in blasting rocks, he received a charge of powder in his face which destroyed his eyes, producing total blindness for the remainder of his life. He was a laborer and did various kinds of work while he had sight. He had thirteen ch. :

(Smith) Hoyt. He was a shoe manufacturer at Epping. He ended his life by suicide eleven days after his m. She m. 2d, Royal Sheldon, who was in the government service. She never had any ch. She travelled extensively. She d. at Tokio, Japan, Aug. 3, 1910. Her body was taken to Boston, U. S. A., and cremated and buried in the Sheldon burial lot.

Leslie A.", b., May 26, 1867; 3. Elizabeth M.9, twin to preceding, b., May 26, 1867 ; d. at So. Gardner, Jan. 25, 1878, of diphtheria ; 4. Frances A.9, b., Aug. 23, 1872 ; 5. William H9, b., Jan. 24, 1877 ; d. in So. Gardner, Feb. 1, 1878, of diphtheria, of which disease three children of the family died within seventeen days. The ch. were all b. at So. Gardner, Mass.

JOHN6 MASON, a first cousin of Samuele, Nathaniel6, and Joseph", the heads of the three preceding families, was, like them, a lineal descendant of Hugh Mason of Watertown, through the line of I. HUGH1; II. JOSEPH2; III. JOSEPH3, JR .; and IV. BENJAMIN4. V. THADDEUS5 MASON, son of Benjamin4, was b. in Sherborn, Mass., July 4, 1746, and d. in Dublin (now Harrisville), Sept. 27, 1821. He m., June 1768, Sarah Morse, b. in Sherborn, Mass., Apr. 24, 1750 ; d. in Dublin (now Harrisville) ()ct. 7, 1828; dau. of Thomas and Mary (Treadway)
Morse. He was a farmer and honored citizen of Dublin. He lived in that part of the town which is now Harrisville, in a house that stood between the summer residences of Rev. L. H. Thayer and Mrs. Rand. His ch. were Betsey6, m. Thaddeus Morse of Dublin ; Thaddeus (father of Hon. Charles Mason of Fitch- burg Mass.) ; Julia6, m. Cyrus Chamberlain of Dublin; Sarah", m. Chas. 1. JOHN6 MASON, SR., son of Thaddeus", V., was b., March 28, 1777, on the old homestead in Dublin (now Harrisville) described in the preceding paragraph. He d. in Lancaster, N. H., Jan. 6, 1836, as the result of a tree fall- ing upon him in the woods upon the previous day. He purchased land in S., in 1799, and built a house at 27, where he lived until 1802, when he returned to his father's homestead and lived until about 1812, when he again returned to S. and lived in a house at 28, which he had built just before returning to his father's homestead. In 1813, he bought the old Rider house at 21, and the lot with it. In 1816, he built the mansion at 22, in which the Hon. D. W. Rugg now lives. Mr. Mason lived in the old schoolhouse which was about on the site of 20, while building the house at 22. He sold the farm to Lucius Nims in 1830 and moved to Lancaster, N. II. He had seven ch. : 1. Laura7, b. in S., at 27, Dec. 16, 1801 ; m. Elijah Baker, q. v. 2. Ebenezer", b. on the paternal homestead in Dublin (now Harrisville), Apr. 11, 1803; d. in S., at 22, Mar. 27, 1818, as the result of a tree falling upon him in the woods, two days before. John Mason, Sr., mn., Jan. 29, 1801, Mary Haven, b. in Natick, Mass., Aug. 16, 1781 ; d. in Sunderland, Mass., Oct. 7, 1868; dau. of David and Abigail (Pren- tiss) Haven. She m. 2nd, Mar. 27, 1849, Charles Prescott Hayward of Han- cock, b. in Concord, Mass .. Sept. 30, 1774 ; d. in Hancock, Feb. 17, 1854; son of Joseph and Rebecca (Prescott) Hayward.

2. MARY HAVENT MASON, dau. of John6, 1, m., Mar. 18, 1841, Seth Adams of Lancaster, N. H., where she res. Mr. Adams was b. in Lancaster, N. H., Feb. 17, 1805, d. there, July 14, 1883 ; son of Benjamin and Sarah (Lamb) Adams. She d. in Lancaster, Nov. 5, 1903. She had two sons : I. George M.8 Adams, b. in Lancaster, May 7, 1846; d. in Oklahoma, Mar. 28, 1905. He m. Caroline Buzzell. He never had a ch. 2. Hurlan Perry8 Adams, b. in Lancas- ter, May II, 1848; still living there in 1912. He m., Dec. 21, 1874, Elmira (?) E. Burleigh. He had three ch. : I. Clarence H.9, b., Aug. 16, 1877 ; 2. Bur- leigh S.9, b., Feb. 7, 1880; drowned at Aurora, Minn., Apr. 17, 1910; 3. George E.9, b., Dec. 8, 1889; all three b. in Lancaster.
3. JOHN MASON? JR., son of John6, 1, d. in East Westmoreland, Oct. 1, 1896. He m., Jan. 24, 1832, Matilda Wilson, b. in Plattsburg, N. Y., Feb. 24, 1810; d. at East Westmoreland, May 2, 1887 ; dau. of James and Sally (Rider) Wilson. She passed her youth in the family of her aunt, Mrs. Moses Adams, Jr., of Dublin. Mr. Mason res. several years after his marriage in Lancaster, N. H., where his first three ch. were born. He came to S. in 1844, and purchased the Reuben Morse farm at 2, the following year. His youngest three ch. were born upon this place. He had six ch. : 1. John Wilson8, b. in Lancaster, Mar. 23, 1837 ; d. in Keene, May 6, 1855; 2. James Bracket8, 6, b. in Lancaster, July 13, 1839; 3. Harriet Adams8, b. in Lancaster, Oct. 19, 1841 ; d. in Keene, Dec. 16, 1853; 4. Emily Haven8, 7, b. in S., at 2, Aug. 7, 1844 ; 5. George Oren8, b. in S., at 2, May 5, 1847; d. unm. at East Westmoreland, Dec. 3, 1884 ; 6. Ellen Matilda8, 8, b. in S., at 2, May 10, 1849. After leaving Sullivan, Mr. Mason lived a few years in Keene, then moved to Westmoreland, and finally to East West- moreland, where he died.
4. ORENT MASON, son of John6, 1, d. in Cincinnati, Ohio, Aug. 24, 1840. He m., June 14, 1840, Elizabeth Shaw. They never had any ch.
5. HON. DAVID HAVEN MASON, son of Johnf, 1, grad. at Dart- mouth College in 1840; pursued a course of study at the Harvard Law School, and practised in Boston. He d. in Newton, Mass., May 29, 1873. See page 596 for a biographical sketch of him. In that sketch the year of his graduation should have been given as 1840. The date of his death there given corresponds with the date given in the general catalogue of Dartmouth College. Another authority gave May 29. He m., June 16, 1845, Sarah Wilson Whlte, b. at Lancaster (?), N. H., June 23, 1822 ; d. at the home of her daughter, in Yonkers, N. Y., March 11, 1906; dau. of John Haven and Roxana (Robinson) White. They had five ch .: 1. Edward Haven8, 9, b. in Newton, Mass., June 8, 1849 ; 2. Elizabeth Amelia White6, b. in Newton, Apr. 7, 1853; d. there, Aug. 26, 1864; 3. Harry Whites, 10, b. in Newton, May 20, 1857; 4. Frank Atlee8, 11, b. in Newton, Apr. 12, 1862. 5. Mabel White®, b. in Newton, Mar. 22, 1867.
