He was engaged in railroad construction in New York, Vermont, and Virginia. Finally, at the outbreak of the Civil War, he went to Greenfield, Ind., and engaged in farming. Joseph Felt of the preceding family, and was b. in Packers- field (Nelson), Dec. 5, 1795, the fifth son of Joseph4, (IV. in the ancestral line described at the beginning of the account of the preceding family) and Elizabeth (Spafford) Felt. He was m. to his second wife in S. He lived in Nelson, Manchester, and Newark, Wis., at which latter place he d., March 22, 1866. He m. Ist, in Nelson, by Rev. C. Cummings of S., Jan. 22, (ac. to diary of Mr. Cummings), 1824, to Tryphena Sprague, b. in Packersfield (Nelson), Mar. I, 1802; d. in Nelson, Feb. 22, 1828; dau. of Dea. John and Betsey (Hayward) Sprague. He m. 2d, in S. (probably by Rev. C. Cummings), Oct. 15, 1831, to Mrs. Bethiah Morris (Boynton) Dakin; b. in S., Feb. 23, 1807; d. at Newark, Wis., Feb. 5, 1879; dau. of David Emery and Bethiah (Morris) Boynton. ZECHARIAH3 FIELD, son of John2 and Mary was b. at East Ardsley in Yorkshire, Eng., ab. 1596; m. ab. 1641, a lady whose first name was Mary, who d. ab. 1670. He d. in Hatfield, Mass., June 30, 1666. He was at Dorchester, Mass., in 1629; at Hartford, Conn., in 1636; at Northampton, Mass., in 1659; and in Hatfield, Mass., in 1663. IV. SERGT. SAMUEL4 FIELD, son of Zechariah3, b. in Hartford, Conn., ab. 1651 ; m., Aug. 9, 1676, Sarah Gilbert, dau. of Thomas and Catherine (Chapin) Gilbert of Springfield, Mass. She was b., Dec. 19, 1655; d., Feb. 4, 1712. Sergt. Field was slain by the Indians in Hatfield meadows, while hoeing corn, June 24, 1697. He was a sergeant in the Turner's Falls fight, May 19, 1676. V. EBENEZER5 FIELD, son of Samuel4, b. in Hatfield, Mass., Mar. 17, 1688 ; m. in 1714, Elizabeth Arms; b. ab. 1695; d., Oct. 1, 1772; dau. of Wm. Arms. Her mother was Joanna Hawks. He m. 2d, Aug. 12, 1756, Martha Root of Sunderland, Mass. ; b., Feb. 20, 1724; d., Mar. 3, 1813. She m. 2d, Dec. 24, 1793, Enoch Bardwell of Montague, Mass. Among the ch. of Ensign Moses were Moses D. Field7, of Surry, who was the grandfather of Mrs. Henry T. Ellis who lived in the south part of Surry, and the great-grandfather of the artist, Francis F. Field, who m. Margaret G. Fawcett, q. v., and Dr. John Montague Field7, 1.


1. DR. JOHN MONTAGUE7 FIELD, son of Ensign Moses6, was b. in Northfield, Mass., July 2, 1764. We have not learned the place and date of his death. He was an able physician, practising in Sullivan, Hinsdale, and Philadelphia, Pa. See page 598, for an account of him. Since that account was written, we have learned many particulars about his ancestry and his family. He belonged to a distinguished family and was an able man. He lived, as is supposed, in the first house that stood upon the site of 232, from ab. 1793

(place unknown), July 5, 1801; day. of Benjamin and Elizabeth Hewes. He m. 2d, June 22, 1802. in S., by R. Hubbard, Esq., Olive Clark, b. in Townsend, Mass., Apr. 20, 1770 ; d. (place unknown), Feb. 4, 1838; dau. of Abraham and Olive (Taylor) Clark. His former wife probably d. in Hinsdale, where it is known that the most of his ch. were born. He had six ch .: 1. Rev. BEN- JAmin2, FIFIELD, son of William1, b. ab. 1646; killed by Indians, Aug. 1, 1706; m., Dec. 28, 1670, Mary, dau. of Edward Colcord. III. JOHN3 FIFIELD, son of Benjamin2, b. in Hampton, Nov. 21, 1671; m. a woman whose first name was Abigail. He was of Kingston, N. H., in 1726. IV. JOHN4 FIFIELD, JR., son of John3, b. in Hampton, Aug. 1, 1701, lived in Kingston. V. JOHN5 FIFIELD, 3d, b. in Kingston in 1733, was, beyond any reasonable doubt, the son of John4, Jr. He was certainly the son of a John Fifield. He m. Anna Snow. This John purchased land in Salisbury (the part now in Franklin), N. H. Mrs. Anna Fifield was present at the birth of Daniel Webster. She was a very capable and energetic woman. He d. in Salisbury (Franklin), Oct. 24, 1824. She d. there, Oct. 21, 1824. Both bodies were buried in the same grave. VI. CAPT. WIN- THROP6 FIFIELD, son of John5, 3d, was probably b. in Kingston. He served as a marine in the Revolution. He settled in Enfield, afterwards Salisbury (now Franklin), N. H. He m., Mar. 11, 1784, Mehetabel Pettengill, dau. of Benjamin · and Mehetabel (Kimball) Pettingill of Salisbury. She was b. in Plaistow. Capt. Fifield had a saw mill on Punch Brook and built a canal which cost $1200, for that day a great undertaking. He d., Jan. 10, 1834. She d., Oct. 8, 1831.

He always lived there, but his widow, after her second marriage, brought her family to S., and lived at 102, hence the insertion here of the family record. 2. SAMUEL NEWELL8 FIFIELD, son of Israel B.7, 1, m., Oct. 19, 1852, Celestine Keith, b. in S., Jan. 2, 1827 ; d. in Fremont, Neb., Oct. 15, 1890; dau. of Hammond and Lucinda (Seward) Keith. He was one of the brightest young men who ever lived in Sullivan. He was a natural scholar, excelling in mathematics. He was at Norwich University in 1849 and 1850. He became a civil engineer. See page 606, in which notice the death of Mrs. Fifield was stated, by mistake, to be in 1891. It should be 1890, as here given. Mrs. Fifield was one of Sullivan's most brilliant women. See the notice on page 607. Mr. Fifield d. in Elkhorn, Neb., very suddenly, of a hemorrhage from the lungs, Oct. 5, 1859. He had no ch.


II. FAMILY OF HORACE R. FIFIELD.


The ancestral line of this family is probably the same as in the family of Israel B. Fifield, just considered, beginning with : I. WILLIAM1, II. BENJAMIN2, III. JOHN3, IV. JOHN4, JR. V. PAUL5, FIFIELD, son of John and Mary, was b. in Kingston, Sept. 23, 1735. There is little doubt that John, the husband of Mary, was the same as John, the fourth in line, as before noted. VI. PAUL6 FIFIELD, who was b. in Concord, N. H., Aug. 6, 1763, is supposed to be the son of the preceding Paul. He came to Marlborough, before 1800, and lived in that part of the town that is now in Roxbury. He m. Temperance Furber, a native of Portsmouth, and a sister of Nathaniel Furber, who was a potter in Marlborough and Pottersville. VII. STILLMAN7 FIEIELD, son of Paul, was b. in Marlborough (Roxbury), June 12, 1802 ; m., Sept. 28, 1828, Julia Robbins of Nelson. He d. in Swanzey, Dec. 15, 1878. She was b. ab. 1808, and d. in Swanzey, Apr. 5, 1881.


1. HORACE ROBBINS8 FIFIELD, son of Stillman™, VII., was b. in Roxbury, Aug. 20, 1844. He is a farmer, and has lived in Marlborough, Swanzey, and in S., at 139, upon the old Dea. Seward farm, where David Seward lived many years, and where the writer of this volume was born. Mr. Fifield has served several times as selectman, and as chairman of the board of selectmen. He has held various town offices. He m. Rua Adelle Palmer, b. in Savannah, N. Y., March 21, 1850; still living in 1910; dau. of Othniel and Almira (Thompson) Palmer. Four ch .: I. 1. REV. ALANSON FISH preached for the Baptist society about a - half of the time through one of their fiscal years, extending from March 2, 1835 to Feb. 27, 1836. He did not have a residence in Sullivan, hence we have not traced his family. Indeed we have been unable to learn anything with regard to him.

1. LEVI FISK2 of Holliston, Mass., son of David and Sarah (Bullard) Fisk, was b. in that town, Feb. 23, 1765. He m. Jemima Underwood, who was b. ab. 1773; d., March 6, 1819. They had seven ch., all b. in Holliston, Mass .: I. Lewis3, b., Feb. 25, 1793; 2. Sally 3; 3. Martin3, b., Oct. 23, 1796; 4. Anne Underwooda; 5. Levi8; 6. Amos3, b., Jan. 19, 1801; and 7. Jemima3. The three named below came to S. to live.


1. SARAH3 (called SALLIE) FISK, dau. of Levi and Jemima (Under- wood) Fisk, was b. in Holliston, Mass., Sept. 2, 1794. She mn. Jeremiah Mason, q. v., and came to S., to live at 51.


2. ANNE UNDERWOOD3 FISK, sister of Sarah (Sallie), was b. in Holliston, Mass., Dec. 24, 1798. She came to S., and lived with Mrs. Jeremiah Mason. She m. William Brown, q. v.


3. JEMIMA3 FISK, a sister of the two preceding, was b. in Holliston, Mass., June 14, 1809. She also came to S., and lived with Mrs. Jeremiah Mason. She m. Ashley Mason, q. v.


II. MRS. HANNAH C. FISK.


1. MRS. HANNAH C.2 (FAY) FISK, who d. at East Sullivan, Nov. 3, 1867, at the home of her brother, Nathaniel Whiting2, Fay, was b. in Grantham, Apr. 10, 1805; dau. of John1 and Sarah (Whiting) Fay. She was the widow of Aaron Fisk, who d., Feb. 19, 1862, at the age of 61 years and eleven months. The bodies of Mr. and Mrs. Fisk are buried in the cemetery at Munsonville. This family never resided in Sullivan. Mrs. Fisk came to her brother's home to remain for a time, and died there.

Jeremiah Higbee of Alstead, to Lydia Nichols of Shirley, Mass,, b. in that town, Dec. 20, 1777 ; d. in S., at 197, Apr. 10, 1833; dau. of Thomas and Elizabeth (Boynton) Nichols; m. 2d, in the year 1834, Lois Stratton of Athol, Mass., who d. in Buffalo, N.
