1. SILAS4 ATWOOD, son of Philip, III., lived in town from 1807 until his death in 1818. It is understood that he lived about a year or more at 178, which his father owned a few years (see page 735), until the house was built at 207, into which Silas moved probably about 1808. He lived there nntil his death, Feb. 2, 1818. His funeral on the next day was conducted by Rev. Chas. Cummings and the burial was in the lot of his father, in the old Nelson cemetery. Silas was unmarried. His housekeeper was a maiden aunt, MISS LYDIA ATWOOD, dau. of John and Elizabeth (Lawrence) Atwood. She was b. in Templeton, Mass. We do not know the date, nor the place of her death. She was a sister of Mrs. Reuben Wright, q. v., and of Mrs. Benjamin Eaton, q. v. She appears to have belonged to the Sullivan Baptist church and was quite likely one of the original members (or convenanters). She had a son, to whom she gave the name of Nathan Nye, who was b. in Nelson (then Packersfield), Aug. 27, 1797, and d., Oct. 24, 1869. He m. Lydia Robbins and lived in the south part of Stoddard, near Munsonville, where Henry Wilson lives. He did not come to Sullivan with his mother and we do not elaborate his family record.

About 1830, the Wardwells moved this house down the hill for a potashery (see 241, page 766), and George Baker moved to the Breed Osgood house, at 246. In 1833, he moved to the farm of Enoch Woods, at 80, which he carried on at " the halves." He was the victim of the dreadful tragedy described on pages 362-364, by which he lost his life, Oct. 16, 1835, from the effects of the stab inflicted by Enoch Woods. We have shown, on the pages mentioned, that Mr. Woods was undoubtedly insane. Eight ch., born in places above indicated :

Eventually she came to the house of her mother, then Mrs. French, at number 3, with her two ch., in destitute circumstances. Still later they went to Ludlow, Vt. We have been unable to trace them. One of the ch. was perhaps born in Alstead, where Mr. Baker owned a farm for a year and a half after his marriage. He lived about 1826-29, on the old Alpheus Davis farm, in the west part of Nelson, next east of the present farm of S. E. Jenkins, who lives at number 2. It is possible that one of his ch. was born there. Perhaps both were.

The changes in spelling from Barber to Barbour and vice versa in that family confuse us. He may have been connected with the Barbers of Windsor, Conn., and have been of the line of Thomas1, Lieut. Josiah2, Aaron3, and James4. There is nothing certain about it.

About 1805 or 1806, the Sewards, who owned the land, permitted him to erect a house at this place.
