7. IRA3 ELLIS, son of Simeon2, 4, lived many years on the Leland farm in S., at 251. He built the house now standing there. IIe moved to West Rutland, Vt., where he d., May 14, 1840. He m., Mar. 21, 1822, Mary Byram Proctor, b. in S., Aug. 4, 1794 ; d. at Black Brook, Polk Co., Wis., Feb. 11, 1385 ; dau. of Philip and Hannah (Locke) Proctor. Before her death, she had m., 2d, David Boynton, q. v. Ira Ellis was a soldier in the war of 1812. He had five ch. all b. in S., at 251 : 1. Mary Caroline4, b., Apr. 20, 1823 ; d. in S., at 251, Sept. 15, 1832. 2. Ira Judson 4, b., Mar. 27, 1824 ; d. unm., at Walton, N. Y., Nov. 21, 1899. He was a recluse by nature. As early as 1859, he disappeared from his mother's home in S., then the Boynton house at 176. Not having been heard from for nine years, in 1868, he was declared "legally dead," and his mother was appointed administrator of his estate. Years passed, and his death at Walton was finally announced in the Sentinel, with the statement that he had " lived the life of a hermit in the forest near Deposit, Keeseville, Rock Drift, and Walton, N. Y." He died at the house of a neighbor, in Walton, where he had been persuaded to tarry. According to the obituary, " Mr. Ellis was at one time a writer for the press and was a friend of Horace Greeley, doing a good deal of work on the Tribune and afterwards on monthly publications. Why he took up the life of a hermit he would never disclose. He lived in a little cabin commanding a superb view of the hill and dale, enjoying the solitude of nature and keeping a few goats for their milk, which, with oatmeal porridge, berries, and trout, formed his principal diet. 8. ASA3 ELLIS, son of Simeon2, 4, was married and ever after lived in S., at 112. Here he d., Feb. 14, 1874. Besides cultivating his farm, he operated the saw-mill at 110. He m., Sept. 27, 1820, Lucy Rugg, b. in Sterling, Mass., Mar. 15, 1796; d. in S., at 38, June 14, 1885; dau. of Elijah and Lois (Wilder) Rugg. Two ch: I. Atwell Comstock4, 10, b. in S., at 112, Oct. 12, 1821 ; 2. Lavina Lane4, b. in same place, Apr. 5, 1825 ; m. George White, q. v. On Sept. 27, 1870, Mr. and Mrs. Asa Ellis celebrated their golden wedding, receiving a large number of relatives, friends and neighbors.


9. NATHAN3 ELLIS, JR., son of Nathan2, 6, lived in Gilsum and d. there, March 9, 1861. He was a farmer. He m., Aug. 23, 1825, Lucina Bing- ham, b. in Gilsum, Oct. 20, 1805 ; d. in Newport, N. H., Sept. 12, 1878; dau. of Zenas and Electa (Mackentire) Bingham. He had three ch., all b. in Gilsum : I. Emily 4, b., Nov. 25, 1825 ; d. in Gilsum, Oct. 13, 1828. 2. Mary4, b., July 8, 1828; m. Samuel Fay, b. in Grantham, Aug. 24, 1813; d. in Nelson, Aug. 15, 1886; son of John and Sarah (Whitney) Fay. She had a son, Malan" Ellis, b. in Gilsum, Jan. 12, 1861. 3. He was a farmer, and operated the saw-mill at II0 ; lived at 112 in S., then at III, for many years after the house was built, then at 112 again for a few years, then at 38, finally in Keene, where he d., Aug. II, 1894. He was a deacon of the First Cong. Ch. in S. He had only one ch., Austin Atwell5, 11, b. in S., at 112, June 14, 1848. Atwell C. Ellis was town clerk of S., several years. He was an influential and much esteemed citizen.


11. HON. AUSTIN A. ELLIS, ex-mayor of Keene, son of Atwell C.4, 10, lived a few years after his marriage at III in S., and operated the saw-mill at IIo, where he also manufactured wooden wares. Later, he moved to 39, at East Sullivan, still operating the same mill. He finally moved to Keene, where · he still res., conducting a brush-handle business on Mechanic St., in which he has been very successful. He was m., Feb. 7, 1872, to Julia Ellen Tyler, b. in Milford, N. H., July 11, 1849; dau. of Putnam and Lucy (Seaver) Tyler. Their only ch., Myrtle Eva 6, was b. in S., at III, Sept. 14, 1875. She m., in Keene, by Rev. W. G. Poor, May 20, 1897, George Bryant Robertson, b. in Chesterfield. Nov. 7, 1868, son of Timothy Norris and Frances C. (Swan) Robertson. Mr. Robertson is a blacksmith and is of the firm of Robertson & Bennett, who operate the Keene Garage near the Eagle Hotel. In 1909, he went to the Phil- ippine Islands, in the employ of the federal government, to manage a line of automobiles which ran on an elegant highway, constructed by the government at a cost of three millon dollars, between Baguio-Benguet, in the mountains, and the terminus of a short railway leading from Manila. The family of Mr. Robertson soon followed him and they took up their abode at Baguio-Benguet. Recently a severe typhoon utterly wrecked this magnificent road and, as we go to press, it is undecided whether it will be rebuilt. The Robertsons have four children, all b. in Keene : 1. EMERSON.


MRS. MARY (REED) EMERSON, widow of Jonathan Emerson of Stoddard, died in S., at the house of her daughter, Mrs. Lestina (Emerson) Hastings, at 141, Dec. 10, 1877. She was temporarily stopping with this daughter, who was the widow of William Hastings. Mrs. Emerson was b. in Stoddard, Apr. 17, 1788, and was the dau. of Joshua and Rebecca (Wright) Reed. She married Jonathan Emerson, in Stoddard, by Rev. I. Robinson, March 5, 1809.

second Isaac, and V. WILLIAM ESTY, son of Aaron. William5 Esty[moved from Topsfield to Keene, and lived on Beech Hill, next farm south of the Ros- well Nims farm, now owned by Louis A. and Fred C. Nims. The old Esty house, occupied after the Estys, by the Keiths, Howards, and others, is not now standing. William5 Esty d. in Keene, Nov. 14, 1819, ae 72. He m. Phebe Dwinell. They had twelve children, the first six of whom were born in Topsfield, Mass., the last six in Keene. They were Ruth6, Phebe6, William6, Deborah6, John D.6, Dorothy6, Aaron6, David6, Nancy Ann6, Solomon6, Fanny6, and Jacob I)6. Their births are given in the " Vital Statistics of Keene."

1. JOHN DWINELL6 ESTY, son of William5, V., and Phebe (Dwinell or Dwinnell) Esty, b. in Topsfield, Mass., Aug. 2, 1781 (bap. there, Aug. 12, 1781 ; d. in Groton, N. H., May 3, 1867 ; came to Keene with his parents about 1784; lived in Keene, Sullivan, and the state of Vermont, and finally went to live with his ch. in Groton, N. H. In S., he lived at 156, from 1812 until 1819. He built the only house on that place and removed it, no one ever living there but himself. He m. in Keene, by Rev. A. Hall, Feb. 1, 1809, Betsey Howard (sometimes spelled Hayward or Heywood), a dau. of William Howard of Stoddard, who began the farm where Heman Jenkins and Asa Davis, Jr., lived in the latter half of the nineeenth century. Betsey's mother's first name was Thomassine (usually written " Tamsin"), it we correctly decipher the chirography. We have not found the places and dates of the birth and the death of Betsey. He was a grandson of Rev. Mr. McGrath, a Scotch Presbyterian clergyman, who came to Londonderry with the early Scotch- Irish settlers of that town. 5. WILLIAM ESTY, son of John I).6, 1, d. in Manchester, N. H., Jan. 13, 1897. He m., in 1842 or 1843, Lucy McGrath, b. in Groton, N. II., July 24, (or 25), 1826; d. in Manchester, Sept. 4, 1887 ; dau. of John Bush and Johanna (Kimball) McGrath. He was a stone mason and r. in Groton, N. H., and Man- chester, and d. in West Manchester. He served on the Manchester police force. For several years he had charge of a section on the railroad. He had six ch., all b. in Groton, N. II., except the fifth, who was b. in Orange, N. H. They were all exceptionally bright and intellectual persons. They were : 1. Adeline 8, b., Jan. 29, 1844 ; d. in Groton, N. H., Mar. 26, 1845. 2. William Fr.8, b., Oct. 13, 1845 ; living in Laconia in 1907; m., Dec. 18, 1902, Rose Horne, b. in city of New York, dau. of Harris and Dora (Hillel) Horne. He was by trade a black- smith and machinist. As a machinist he was employed in important plants in Laconia, Manchester, N. H., and Worcester, Mass. He was also in shops in Fitchburg, Mass., St. John, N. B., Providence, R. I., New Bedford, Mass., New York, N. Y., and Paterson, N. J., where he went into business for himself. He was later in business in Fitchburg and other places, and, in 1880, he located in Laconia, N. H. He has been a great inventor. Since 1875, one invention after another has come from his brain. Today, he has more than sixty United States patents to his credit, including patents on emery and grinding wheels, planer chucks, sewing machines, knitting machines, steam boilers, steam engines, auto- matic sprinklers for fire extinguishers, universal joint couplings for shafting, friction clutches, knit fabric for hydraulic hose, machine for knitting the same, vehicle wheels, vehicle tires, and many other things too numerous to mention. His best known inventions are those connected with the hosiery and knitting industries and the automatic sprinkler. He is president of the Esty Sprinkler Co. of Laconia. No ch. 3. 6. DAUPHIN7 ESTY, son of John D.6, 1, improperly spelled his own name Dorphin. He was named, like a dozen other boys connected with Sullivan families, for Dauphin White, a very brilliant young man, who d. in S. early in life. He d. in Groton, N. H., in 1886. He m. Lydia H. Butterfield, who was b in Groton, Jan. 18, 1817 ; d. there, Apr. 9, 1892. They had two ch. : I. Leoda 8.

7. DAVIDS ESTY, son of William", V., and brother of John D.6., of the pre- ceding family, was b. in Keene, Aug. 7, 1788. We have not been able to find the date or particulars of his marriage. His wife was Mary Esty, b. in S., June 18, 1794 ; d. in Keene, Mar. 17, 1858; dau. of Ichabod and Abigail (Hammond) Keith. He first lived in Peterborough, then in S., at 128, from 1824 to 1842 ; three of these years, however, (1835-1838), he spent upon the place at 237, work- ing in the shoe shop at 238. He was a shoemaker, as well as farmer. In 1842, he moved to Walpole, where he d., Feb. 27, 1843. He had but one ch. : George Washington7, 8, b. in Peterborough. June 5, 1823.


8. GEORGE W.7 ESTY, son of David6, 7, lived at first on a farm in Walpole, then moved to Keene, where he conducted an eating house for several years, and was afterwards engaged in various kinds of business. He d. in West. moreland, Oct. 23, 1889. He m., Dec. 30, 1844, Ann Lucretia Graves of Stoddard, b. in that town, Apr. 1827 ; d. in Keene, Mar. 9, 1876; dau. of George and Hannah (Hastings) Graves. They had no ch., but adopted legally Mary Evelina Edwards 8, b. in Boston, Mass., Sept. 12, 1853, dau. of George W. and I)eborah H. Edwards. 9.


9. MARY EVELINA& EDWARDS-ESTY, adopted dau. of George W.7, 8, d. in Keene, Nov. 24, 1895. She m., in Keene, by Rev. W. O. White, Nov. 29, 1871, Albert Loring Harkness, b. in Richmond, Feb. 26, 1850; still living (1910), in Keene; son of Elisha and Sarah Ann (Burgess) Harkness. She had eleven ch., all b. in Keene: 1. III. FAMILY OF SOLOMON ESTY.


10. SOLOMON6 ESTY, son of William", V., b. in Keene, May 21, 1793 ; d. at the house of his son, Solon, in Stoddard, Aug. 15, 1864; m. in Weathers- field, Vt., Apr. 1, 1818, Clarissa Taskett, b. in Charlestown, N. II., Dec. 12, 1800 ; d. in Keene, Apr. 27, 1883; dau. of James and Hannah (Safford) Taskett. He lived more than a year in Roxbury, then for fifteen years in Stoddard, in the first house above Chandler's mill, at the top of Chandler Hill. For thirty years, from 1834, he owned the Jona. Kendall farm in S., at 144. He transferred this property to his son, Solon, and died soon after. While owning the Sullivan farm, he lived a few years in Keene, renting the farm. He lived a short time in S., on the Solon Esty place, at 128. His widow lived in Keene, then in S., at 33, from 1865 to 1871, then in Keene, where she died. Mr. Esty was a farmer. Amanda Melvina™, b. in Stoddard, Apr. 6, 1831 ; d. unm., in Fitchburg, Mass., Apr. 30, 1870 ; 7. Clarissa Ann7, b. in Stoddard, Nov. 6, 1832; m. Edmund Blodgett, q. v .; 8. Adaline Mary7, b. in S., at 144, Dec. 27, 1834; m. Sabin Sherwin, q. v. ; 9. Eliza Maria 1, 15, b. in S., at 144, Oct. 19, 1836; 10. Henry Oscar7, 16, b. in S., at 144, Dec. 4, 1838; 11. George Edward7, b. in S .. at 144, Dec. 28, 1840; d. in Keene, unm., Oct. 30, 1857 ; 12. Lyman Elbridge 7, 17, b. in S., at 144, May 24, 1846. Besides these twelve, there was an infant son which died soon after birth, b. in Stoddard, about 1825. There were also two infants which died at birth, b. in S., at 144, about 1842 and 1844 respectively. There were in all fifteen children, one of the largest families of the town.


11. LURA A.7 ESTY, dau. of Solomon6, 10, m., Sept. 8, 1842, Ebenezer Tarbox, Jr., b. in Stoddard (now Nelson), Dec. 7, 1815 ; d. in Nelson, Mar. 5, 1881 ; son of Ebenezer and Polly (Blodgett) Tarbox. They lived in Nelson, near Mun- sonville. After his death, she lived in Nelson, also in S., at the house of Henry Davis, at 6 ; also at 16 earlier, not far from 1888; then in Keene, where she died. Dec. 3, 1895. They had one ch : Emogene Amanda 8, b. in Nelson, Dec. II, 1843; d. there, Dec. 22, 1861.


12. SOLON' ESTY, son of Solomon6, 10, lived in S., at 128, from 1846 to 1858; then moved to Stoddard, where he died, Dec 5, 1884. He m. Ist, Dec. II, 1851, Chestina Warren, b. in Stoddard, June 1826; d. there, Apr. 27, 1866; dau. of Daniel and Susan (Spaulding) Warren. He m. 2d, in Keene, June 21, 1867, by Rev. J. A. Leach, Mrs. Sarah A. (Ruffle) Buffum, b. in Keene, Oct. 25, 1833; d. in Antrim, Apr. 17, 1901 ; dau. of William and Abigail (Tufts) Ruffle, and widow of George Buffum. He was a farmer, but was landlord of the tavern in Stoddard Centre for a few years. He had one ch : Sylvia Adelaide 8, b. in S., at 128, Dec. 9, 1852 ; d. in Stoddard, Oct. 8, 1865.


13. MARTHA J.7 ESTY, dau. of Solomon6, 10, still living (1910) in Mun- sonville ; m., Aug. 15, 1849, Henry Danforth Taylor, b. in Stoddard, July 7, 1826; still living (1910) in Munsonville, son of Danforth, Jr. and Martha (Stearns)

Taylor. He was a farmer in Nelson, also operated a saw-mill. He has recently moved to the house formerly occupied by his brother Frederick, in Munsonville. They had one ch. : Mary Frances &, b. in Nelson, Dec 23, 1855 ; d. in Dorchester, Mass., Dec. 9, 1888, s. p. ; m., July 28, 1885, Henry Delano Goodale, b. in Weare, N. H., June 27, 1854 ; son of Hilliard L. and Sarah E. (Tead) Goodale. He is in business in Boston, Mass.


14. CHARLES D.7 ESTY, son of Solomon6, 10, was a carpenter in Keene, and was later employed in an assay office in the city of New York, in the treas- ury building on Wall Street. He was later associated in a loan office at 141 Broadway, city of New York. He d. in Keene, while on a visit, Mar. 14, 1904. The burial was at- East Orange, N. J., where he res., while in business in New York. He m., Nov. 11, 1857, Hannah Cordelia Hirsch, b. in Burlington, Vt .. Mar. 25, 1837 ; d. in Keene, Nov. 16, 1907 (burial at East Orange, N. J.) ; dau. of Charles F. and Isabel M. (Jameson) Hirsch. They had one son, Charles Fred- erick 8, b. in Keene, Sept. 22, 1860 ; unm. ; res. in Republic, Washington.
