1. ELEAZERI HATHORN lived in S., on what became the Martin Rugg farm, at 59. He bought it of Nahum Haven in 1814, and sold it to Martin Rugg in 1825. We have not learned his ancestral history and do not know his parentage or the places and dates of his birth and death. He was first m. in Packersfield (Nelson), by Rev. Gad Newell, Mar. 16, 1797, to Submit Newton, who d. in Packersfield (Nelson), Mar. 2, 1808. He was then of Temple. He m.

He was probably the Eleazar who was father of Susan3 Hathorn, b. in Londonderry, Vt., ab. 1840; d. there, Dec. 31, 1869, who m., July 3, 1868, Lorenzo Schaffner, b. in Hunter, N. Y., Dec. 10, 1842 ; son of George and Huldah Elizabeth (LaHaugh) Shaffner, and who lived for a time in Gilsum. 4. Ebene- zes2, b. in S., at 59, June 7, 1816. 5. Perhaps some infant, born between 1821 and his removal in 1825, survived its birth but a short time, or some other member of the family may have died. There is no Sullivan record of any death in the family.

I. RICHARD1 HAVEN of Lynn, Mass., came from England in 1645. His w. was Susannah, who d., Feb. 7, 1682. They had twelve ch., and we know no more of them. II. MOSES2 HAVEN, one of the sons, b. in Lynn, May 20, 1667 ; m. Mary Ballard of Lynn. They had six ch. in Lynn ; then moved to Framingham, Mass., where they had two more. III. RICHARD3 HAVEN, son of Moses, b. in Lynn, Mass., Jan. 8, 1692/3 ; d. in Athol, Mass., Aug. 3, 1770; m., Feb. 4, 17134, Lydia Whitney, b. Apr. 1695, in Framingham, Mass. They had fourteen ch. IV. SIMON4 HAVEN, son of Richard, was b. in Framingham, Mass., July 2, 1735. HIe m. Ruth Baldwin. They lived in Spencer, Mass., Athol (now Phillipston), Mass., and Marlborough, N. II. They had eleven ch.


1. JOHN HAVEN, son of Simon4, IV., was b. in Spencer, Mass., June 7, 1762 ; d. in Columbia, Bradford Co., Pa., Aug. 13, 1828. He m. Abigail Tay, b. in Athol, Mass., Apr. 16, 1762 ; d. in Columbia, Pa., Nov. 23, 1843. He moved to S., with his large family about 1801, and lived, at first, on the site of 28, immediately west of the George Kingsbury house, on a road now discontinued. About 1812, his son, Nahum, then unmarried, bought the farm where Martin Rugg lived later, at 59. The IIavens lived there about three years in a tempor- ary house that stood where the present house stands. Then they moved to Columbia, Bradford, Co., Pa. They had nine ch .: I. She has been, by mistake, in some records, called the dau. of Joseph Ellis, Sr. She was the dau. of Benjamin, the son of Joseph, Sr. They had a very large family of twelve ch. : I. Y., July 10, 1898; dau. of John and Abigail (Williams) Tread- way. He d. at Ticonderoga, Sept. 3, 1865. They had a dau., Mary J.7 Haven, b., Oct. 6, 1846. 10. Laura6, b., Feb. 24, 1812, probably in Middlebury, Vt. ; m. a man named Thompson and had no ch. II. Ira Abel 6, b., June 6, 1814, probably in Middlebury, Vt. He m. and had two ch., Adelaide™ and James C7. 12. Mary Johnson6, b., Mar. 7, 1817, probably in Middlebury, Vt. Simon Haven lived in S. from ten to fifteen years after his marriage. It is not positively certain where he lived, but tradition makes it to have been in the old Benjamin Ellis house, which stood about on the site of 234, or perhaps a little nearer 237. His children were very young when he moved to Middle- bury, Vt.


II. DAVID HAVEN FAMILY.


I. RICHARDI HAVEN was the progenitor of this family in America, as he was of the Simon Haven family of the preceding section. II. NATHANIEL2 HAVEN, son of Richard1, was b. in Lynn, Mass., June 30, 1664. His wife was Elizabeth. He lived in Framingham, Mass. III. NATHANIEL3 HAVEN, JR., b. in Framingham, Sept. 8, 1704; m. a woman named Hephzibah and lived in Hopkinton, Mass. IV. DAVID4 HAVEN, son of Nathaniel3, Jr., b. in Hopkinton, Mass., May 22, 1734; d. in Natick, Mass., Sept. 3, 1805; was the ancestor of many Sullivan persons. He m., Apr. 30, 1761, at Sherborn, Mass., Abigail Prentiss, b. in Sherborn, May 23, 1745; d. in S., at the house of Asa Leland, at 251, Oct. 13, 1837, ae. 92 yrs. She was the dau. of Nathaniel and Abigail

David5, 1, b., Dec. 2, 1776. 8. Nathaniel5, b., May 13, 1779; d. in Watertown, N. Y., in 1861 ; had nine ch. 9. Mary 5, b., Aug. 16, 1781 ; m. John Mason of S., q. v. 10. Calvin5, b., Mar. 7, 1784. He lived in Boston, Mass., and had four ch., one of whom m. Rev. Edward Abiel Stevens, a famous missionary of the Baptists in Burmah. A dau. of the latter was the wife of Rev. Wm. H. Spencer of the Baptist church in Waterville, Me. The latter's brother, Rev. Edward O. Stevens, also a mission- ary in Burmah, was in Waterville a short time. II. Luther 5, b., Aug. 13, 1786, lived in Natick and had eight children.


1. DAVID HAVEN, son of David4, IV., b. in Natick, Mass., Dec. 2, 1776; d. in Perrysville, Ind., Dec. 9, 1850. He m., in Natick, Mass., Aug. 29, 1798, Hannah Coolidge, dau. of Isaac and Abigail Coolidge. He m. 2d, in 1815, Patty Hildreth, b. in Durham, Conn., Feb. 13, 1790 ; d. in Perrysville, Ind., Feb. 26, 1850. He lived in Natick, S., Brownville, N. Y., and other places. He came to S., about 1799. He had three sisters at East S .; Mrs. Jeremiah Leland, who was living where Q. B. Nash lives, at 26; Mrs. John Mason, who was then living in the old house on the site of 27 ; and Mrs. Thomas Rider, who had just moved into a framed house that stood nearly on the site of 21, very nearly on the site of Hon. D. W. Rugg's house. The Lelands and Masons came to town in 1799. The Riders came in 1798. There is a tradition, related to the writer by Miss Patty Leland, that Davide Haven came also in the last part of 1799, to be near his sisters, and lived in a log house that stood quite near the site of the house of Lyman Davis, at 20, which the Riders had just left, having moved into their framed house at 21. David5 Haven lived in town so short a time that we shall only make a brief mention of his children. He had six by the first w. and eight by the second. The six by the former w. were the following : 1. Orasa 6 (a son), b. in Natick, Mass., Mar. 6, 1799; 2. Abigail6, b. in S., probably at the log house near the present site of 20, Oct. 25, 1801 ; 3. Ist, Emma Jane Neal, b., July 3, 1832 ; d., May 25, 1863. He m. 2d, Nov. 18, 1869, Harriet Marden of Portsmouth, N. H., b. there, Mar. 27, 1840 ; dau. of Israel and Sarah (Tilton) Marden. He had one ch. by each w. : 1. Harriet Jane 3, b., Aug. 17, 1856; 2. Alfred James 3, b. at East S., at 3, June 3, 1876. The dau. m., Aug. 15, 1876, Charles P. Webb of Pittsfield, Mass. From about 1895 to 1897, he lived in the old Chauncy W. Raw- son house in S., at 175. He then returned to Keene. He m., March 23, 1885, Nellie Jane Ellis, b. in Keene, Feb. 25, 1865; dau. of Warren R. and Emeline F. (Baker) Ellis. Ch : 1. Bertha Emeline3, b. in Keene, Oct. 29, 1885 ; 2. 1853 ; dau. of Frederick Kimball 1 and Caroline Matilda (Hardy) Pratt. She m. Ist, in Keene, by Rev. Wm. O. White, Oct. 30, 1872, John R. Kenyon, then 24, a native of Burlington, Vt., son of Alvin and Harriette Kenyon. They were divorced, and she m. 2d, William Casson Heald, b. in Washington, N. H., Aug. 15, 1867 ; son of John E. and Mary (Dawson) Heald. They are divorced, and he m. 2d, Ida Thompson. He is a baggage expressman and freight forwarder in Bellows Falls, Vt. He was formerly in the ice business in Keene.


HEALEY.


MRS. MARY ANN (CHILDS) HEALEY, b., May 29, 1785; d. in East S., at 14, at the house of her granddaughter, Mrs. Elbridge H. Taft, Oct. 5, 1877. She was the widow of William Healey, who d., Jan. 21, 1849.


HEATON.


1. JONATHAN2 HEATON, son of Seth1 and Thankful (Field) Heaton, was b. in Keene, Dec. 10 (N. S.), 1750; d. in S., at 24, July 17, 1837. He lived in S., at first on what was afterwards the Proctor farm at 252, from 1777 to 1791, then he purchased the place at 24, where Franklin Buckminster afterwards lived, and lived there until his death. His father was the elder Seth Heaton, who built the oldest house now standing upon its original site in Keene. It is on Marlboro St., and has recently been marked with a tablet. Jonathan was the first settler of each of the S. farms above mentioned. He m., Oct. 22, 1780, in Keene, by Rev. A. Hall, to Mrs. Thankful (Sawyer) Clark, b. in Lancaster, Mass., Oct. 8, 1752 ; d. in S., Aug. 15, 1835; dau. of Nathaniel and Mary (Houghton) Sawyer, and the widow of Isaac Clark, by whom she had a son, Isaac Clark, q. v., in the Supplemental Genealogies. He m., Jan. 10, 1825, Lovisa Seward, b. in S., May 6, 1797 ; d. in Keene, Dec. 23, 1843; dau. of Capt. Samuel and Olive (Adams) Seward. They had six ch. : I. HEMENWAY.


I. RALPH1 HEMENWAY came from England about 1632 and settled in Roxbury, Mass. From him are descended all persons in the country, who previous to 1850, bore the name of Hemenway or any one of the dozen variations of that name. He d. in 1678. He m., July 5, 1634, Elizabeth Hewes, b. ab. 1604 ; d. in 1686. II. JOSHUA2 HEMENWAY, son of Ralph1, b. ab. 1643; m., Jan. 16, 1667, Joanna Evans. They moved to Framingham, Mass., where he d. in 1716, having taken an active part in town and church affairs. III. EBENE- ZER3 HEMENWAY, son of Joshua2, was a weaver and moved from Dorchester, Mass., to Framingham, Mass. He m., May 17, 1711, Hannah Winch, b. in Framingham, Jan. 16, 1687/8; d. there, Apr. 27, 1737; dau. of Samuel and Hannah (Gibbs) Winch. IV. EBENEZER4 HEMENWAY, JR., b. in Framing- ham, Oct. 24, 1712 ; m. Mary Eve of Roxbury, Mass. V. 1. REV. LUTHER6 HEMENWAY, son of Jacob5 and Abigail (Eaton) Hemenway, was b. in Framingham, Mass., May 21, 1780; d. in Springfield, Vt., May 2, 1870. He was originally a Baptist, but, under the preaching of Rev. Mr. Rollins, became an adherent of the " Christian Connection," so-called, and was ordained to the ministry of that denomination in his own house in S., at 210. Ist, July 10, 1803, Finis Patterson, b. in Framingham, Mass., Sept. 1, 1784; d. in Gilsum, Dec. 22, 1857 ; dau. of David and Beulah (Clark) Patterson. He m. 2d, Feb. 1, 1859, Mrs. Pamelia (Buss) Howard, b. in Marlborough, June 30, 1788; d. in Gilsum, Jan. 18, 1867; dau. of John and Mary (Wood) Buss, and the widow of Thomas Howard. Mr. Hemenway was a farmer, preacher, and inventor. He invented the famous awl- handle still in use, the first one being made in his old shop at 209. See pages 574, 595, and 751. The first six of his nine ch. were b. in Boylston, Mass .; the last three in S., on the site of 207, where he lived from 1819 until 1828, when he built the house at 210, in which he lived until 1832, when he moved just across the town line into Gilsum. Charles Cummings, June 25, 1828, Mary Cummings, b. in S., at 1931/2, Aug. 22, 1807; d. at Florence, Italy, Feb. 20, 1885; dau. of Rev. Charles and Mary (Hemenway) Cummings. They had two ch .: I. Rosalie8, b. in New York, N. Y., Oct. 4, 1830; d. there, Apr. 10, 1832 ; 2. Pauline8, b. in New York, N. Y., Nov. 23, 1832. Pauline m., Nov. 22, 1849, in Jersey City, N. J., Domenico Altrocchi, b. about 1814, in Lodi, Lom- bardy ; d., Aug. 17, 1879, at Viareggio, Italy. She had four ch .: 1. Nicola9 Altrocchi, b. in New Hamburg, N. Y., Sept. 11, 1850; d. in Florence, Italy, Oct. 26, 1894; a graduate of Harvard University, in 1872. He m., June 1874, Annie Humphrey, dau. of Dr. and Anne Olivia (Rowe) Humphrey of Stamford, Conn., where their dau. Pauline Hemenway10 Altrocchi, was b., June 4, 1875. The latter m. Lucas von Gundlach, a major in the German army, who d., Feb. 7, 1910, leaving three ch .: August Nicola11, ae. 14 yrs .; Anniell, ae. 10 yrs. ; and Marietta11, ae. 6 yrs .; who res. with their mother at Radebül bei Dresden, in Saxony. 2. Maria9 (called Minnie) Altrocchi, b. in New York, June 23, 1852 ; m., Feb. 6, 1876, at the Villa Altrocchi, near Florence, Italy, Giacomo Martinetti, who d, in Florence, Italy, Jan. 30, 1910. He was a native of Salo on Lake Garda. IFis mother was of the Maselli family. He was a famous painter. Among the paintings that he left are nine large altar paintings in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre at Jerusalem. Mrs. Martinetti had five ch .: (1). Carlo Domenico10, b. in Florence, Italy, Apr. 7, 1878; m. in the fall of 1904, Lillian Swift in Bing- hampton, N. Y. He graduated from the University of Siena, with M. D., in 1904, and is a practising physician in Orange, N. J. (2). Lucia10, b in Florence, Apr. 8, 1881. (3). Margherita70, b. in Florence, Dec. 6, 1883. (4). Her mother's maiden name was Bertha Wippern, who was of Hildesheim, Hanover, Germany. After Rodolfo's death, Mrs. Altrocchi m. 2d, June 24, 1905, Louis Ezra Guillow (see under the paragraph Finis P. Hemenway, in this Hemenway family). Rodolfo9 had two ch .: (1). Rodolfo10, b. in Florence, Italy, Oct. 31, 1884; educated at the French School of Prof. Domunge in Florence, at the Milan School of Technology, at the Institute Erika in Zurich, Switzerland, at the Prosso School in Kansas City, Mo., and took the degrees of A. B. and A. M. at Harvard, in 1908. He spells his first name in the English form, Rudolph. (2). Elisabetta10 (Elizabeth), b. in Florence, Italy, Oct. 26, 1885; educated in Florence, at the German School of Fraulein Müller, and the English High School in Boston; m. in 1901, Henry Choistry, in Springfield, Mo.
