This FROST family was one of the most cultured families of the town. Mr. and Mrs. Elijah Frost were the ancestors of seven college graduates (six from Dartmouth and one from Williams) and of three more who married college graduates. Four of these, the three sons of Benjamin Frost, and one of the sons of Maria (Frost) Nims, were b. in the house that stood at 72.


2. DEA. SELIM6 FROST, son of Elijah 5, 1, spent his youth in the family of Samuel Osgood, at 108, in S. His wife had also passed her youth with Mr. and Mrs. Osgood, who had no ch. Mr. Frost succeeded Mr. Osgood upon this farm, where he remained until 1857, when he sold the farm to George Wardwell and moved to Athol, Mass., where he d., Sept. 19, 1858. He was for twenty years a deacon in the First Cong. Ch. of S. He m., Feb. 26, 1824, Lydia Heald, b. in Packersfield (Nelson), Apr. 18, 1804; d. in Milford, N. 3. DEA. BENJAMIN® FROST, son of Elijah5, 1, lived until 1837 upon the homestead farm in S., at 72. He then moved to Thetford, Vt., where he d., Aug. 7, 1872. 1863, to Rev. Moses Payson Parmelee, b. in Westford, Vt., May 4, 1834; son of Rev. Simeon and Phebe (Chapin) Parmelee. He grad. at the University of Ver- mont, 1855, and at the Union Theological Seminary in New York in 1861 ; was ordained, July 2, 1861, as a missionary ; was an army chaplain, in the 3d Vt. Vols., in 1861-62; became a missionary of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, and sailed, May 30, 1863, shortly after his marriage, for Asia Minor. They located at Erzeroum in Asiatic Turkey, where she d., Feb. 17, 1870. In 1872, he removed to Trebizond, on the southern shore of the Baltic Sea. His work was in Armenia, in which country occurred the terrible massacre of Christians by Turkish subjects (Kurds and Turks), in 1894. He received the degree of M. D. from L. I. College Hospital in 1871. It is neces- sary for missionaries to doctor the bodies as well as care for the souls of their converts. He lived in S., 1835-1840, before his marriage, on the old Sawyer farm, at 248, which farm he owned. After his marriage, he res. in Swanzey several years, then went to the state of New York. He has been for several years a book-keeper in Keene, at the Holbrook grocery store, then at Pierce's South Keene shops, later in the offices of C. B. Perry & Sons, and now (1910) in the office of the Keene Gas and Electric Co. He m., in Dublin, Oct. 20, 1897, by Rev. Geo. E. Littlefield of Peterborough, to Emma Gertrude Pierce of Dublin, b. there, Nov. 17, 1876; dau. of Rufus Piper and Sarah Maria (Gleason) Pierce. He has built a fine residence on Roxbury St. in Keene. He settled first in S., after his marriage, at 228, which he owned five years, 1812-1817. He then moved to Benson, Vt. He m., Feb. 2, 1813, Betsey Cowee; dau. of James and Susannah (Baldwin) Cowee of Westminster, Mass. He had two ch. that were b. in S., at 228. 1. Joseph Alexander7, b., May 21, 1814 ; 2. Edwin7, b., Jan. 9, 1816. Mr. Gibbs d. at Benson, Vt., June 7, 1855; Mrs. Gibbs d. there, Sept. 18, 1852, ae. 63.

1. JOHN FRANCIS GLAWSON, b. in Boston, Mass., in Oct. 1845; d. in Hillsborough, Apr. 19, 1880. He m., Dec. 24, 1874, Orra Wood Bridge, b. in Roxbury, Mar. 19, 1854; living in 1910; dau. of Ezra Kendall and Nancy Rebecca (Crossfield) Bridge. They res. in Hillsborough. Shortly after his death, in 1880, she moved to East S., and lived two years, 1880-82, in the south part of the house at 30. Mr. Glawson had been a carder. At East S., she took boarders. One ch., John Edgar2 Glawson, b. in Hillsborough, March 21, 1876, who is unm. in 1910, and an electrician in San Francisco, Cal. Mrs. Glawson m. 2d, May 30, 1899, Henry Amos Spofford, b. in Fitzwilliam, July 22, 1835, son of Abijah and Betsey (Sweetser) Spofford. He is employed in the Keene Wood- enware factory ; res. Roxbury and Harrison Sts., Keene. No. ch.

He m. in Keene, by Rev. C. B. Elder, Feb. 28, 1902, Mabel Annie Barnard, b. in Ludlow, Vt., Dec. 28, 1874; dau. of Isaac E. and Abbie Ann (Hart) Barnard. He is a farmer and has (at this writing) three ch .: I. Frank Harold3, b. in Keene, Sept. 9, 1903; 2. Ralph William3, b. in Keene, Nov. 13, 1904 ; 3. Albert Edwards, b. in Keene, Nov. 23, 1907.

II. THOMAS2 GLEASON, JR., b. probably in England, 1637, d. in Framingham, Mass., July 25, 1705. Sarah, his first w., d. in Framingham, July 8, 1703. His second w. was named Mary. Gleason Pond in Framingham was named for him, and four generations of his descend- ants lived on its banks. III. ISAAC® GLEASON, son of Thomas, Jr., b. in Sherborn (now Framingham), ab. 1674; d. in Framingham, Dec. 5, 1737; m. in Sherborn, Dec. 11, 1700, Deborah, dau. of Ebenezer and Deborah Leland, who was born in Sherborn, Aug. 16, 1679. IV. ISAAC4 GLEASON, JR., b. in Fram- * ingham, May 17, 1706; d. in Petersham, Mass., probably in 1777. Hem. in Framingham, Dec. 9, 1725, Thankful, dau. of Nathaniel and Elizabeth (Osland) Wilson, b. in Framingham, ab. 1703; d. in Westmoreland, N. H., at the age of 94. They had eleven ch., four of whom, Thankful5 (m. Wm. Daggett), James5, Benjamin5, and Fortunatus5, settled in Westmoreland, N. H. Fortunatusỹ was the father of Capt. Wilson6 Gleason of Westmoreland, whose second w. was Mrs. Arba Barker, mother of the late Henry H. Barker of Keene. Capt. Wil- son6 Gleason was a first cousin of the grandfather of Winsor8, 3d, and Dr. Aaron R.8 Gleason. V. ISAAC GLEASON, 3d, son of Isaac, Jr., b. in Framing- ham, Mass., Aug. 3, 1726; d. in Langdon, N. WINSOR6 GLEASON, son of Isaac", 3d, b. in Shrewsbury, Mass., Feb. 18, 1762; res. in Charlestown and Langdon, N. H., and d. in 1816. He m. Ist Sarah Gleason of Dana, Mass., b., Apr. 7. 1767. He m. 2d Patty Follett. VII. WINSOR7 GLEA- SON, JR., b. in Langdon, Feb. 15, 1796; d. in Canaan, N. H., July 10, 1878 ; m. Ist, Apr. 24, 1817, Sophia Clark, b. in Langdon, Nov. 14, 1799; d. in War- ren, Vt., Apr. 3, 1846; mother of all his ch. He m. 2d, May 4, 1847, Elmira Silsby, b. in Acworth, Jan. 2, 1803; dau. of Joshua G. and Polly (Fisher) Silsby. He lived in Langdon, Warren, Vt., Gilsum, and Canaan. He had nine ch. D., was b. in Warren, Vt., Aug. 26, 1827; served in the Civil War; m., in Petersham, Mass., July 4, 1850, Mary Angelia Powers of Hardwick, Mass., b. in Richmond, N. H., Feb. 16, 1829; d. Mar. 30, 1897, in Elkland (?), Pa .; dau. of David and Mary (Gleason) Powers. He has lived in Petersham, Mass., Greenwich, Mass., then in S., on the Dea. Gibbs farm, at 206, 1855-56; then in Gilsum, Petersham a second time, and finally in Elkland, Pa., where he was living when the record was taken. He was a farmer. He had six ch .: 1. We have considerable information with regard to the ancestors of the Sullivan Goodnows, which the family has published in pamphlet form, and we shall, therefore, give here a condensed account. I. EDMUND1 GOODNOW, pro- genitor of the family in America, came from England, in the Confidence, arriv- ing, Apr. 11, 1638. He settled in Sudbury, Mass. He d. in Sudbury, Apr. 5, 1688. His wife's name was Anne. They came from Dunhead in Wiltshire. II. CAPT. JOHN2 GOODNOW, son of Edmund1, is sometimes called John, Jr., not because he was a son of John, but because he was the younger of two of that name. He was under four years of age when he came from England with his father, and d. in Sudbury, Aug. 6, 1721. Mary, his wife, d. there, Apr. 14, 1704. III. JOSEPH3 GOODNOW, son of Capt. John, b. in Sudbury, Dec. 1, 1674; d. there, Sept. 3, 1758. Patience, his wife, d. in Sudbury, Feb. 23, 1731/2. IV. DANIEL4 GOODNOW, son of Joseph3, b. in Sudbury, June 16, 1707; d. there, May 27, 1777; m. Ist, May 18, 1731, Sarah Rice, who d. in Sudbury, Apr. 30, 1736. He m. 2d, a woman whose first name was Ruth. V. ABRAHAM5 GOODNOW, son of Daniel4, was b. in Sudbury, Apr. 27, 1749; d. in Packers- field (now Nelson), Sept. 15, 1804; m. Ist, Oct. 29, 1772, Lucy Perry, b. in Sudbury, Oct. 21, 1753; d. there, Dec. 9, 1777; dau. of Obadiah and Sarah Perry ; m. 2d, May 14, 1780, Mrs. Silence (Tower) Ingersoll; b. in Sudbury, Aug. 31, 1754 ; d. in Packersfield (Nelson), July 28, 1800; dau. of Ambrose and Jerusha (Clapp) Tower, and the widow of Simeon Ingersoll.
