Evangelical Church at East Sullivan, of which he became a prominent member. As the result of an injury, he suffered the amputation of a leg, March 28, 1866. See page 794. He survived this accident fifteen years. Hem. Ist, March 15, 1831, Mrs. Nancy (Breed) Sheldon, b. in Nelson, Feb. [I, 1803; d. in S., at 22, Sept. 24, 1856; dau. of Nathaniel, 3d, and Nancy (Whitney) Breed. She previously m., Jan. 20, 1825, Gardner Sheldon of Nelson, b. in Packerfield (later called Nelson), June 30, 1798; d. in Nelson, Jan. 14, 1826; son of Ezra and Sarah (Day) Sheldon. They had a son, Gardner Sheldon, Jr., who d. in infancy, Aug. 7, 1826. The body of Mrs. Nims was the first buried at East Sullivan. The first grave in which it was placed was a little west of the present cemetery. . When that cemetery was laid out, this body was moved to its present position. Mr. Nims m. 2d, Oct. 9, 1862, Mrs. Elizabeth Currier (Tate) Dunlap, b. in Salem, Mass., April 6, 1824; dau. of Wm. and Mary Baldwin ( Hall) Tate, and widow of James Dunlap, Esq., of Haverhill, Mass. She subsequently m. Charles Franklin Wilson, Esq., q. v., formerly of S., then of Keene, whom she survived, and is still living, at a great age, in Roxbury, Mass., in 1913. She m., Nov. 11, 1852, Aaron Harvey Livermore, b. in Gilsum, Apr. 21, 1827; d. in Lexington, Mass., of apoplexy, January 8, 1896; son of John and Electa (Goddard) Livermore. IIe was a dentist. They had no ch. Dr. Livermore was m. a second time.
2. LUCIUS PEMBROKE NIMS, b. in S., at 22, Apr. 16, 1838; d. in S., at 20, Dec. 22, 1888. He was a farmer and lived upon the homestead, at 22, from his marriage until about 1870; then in the Samuel Seward house at 19, until the fall of 1871 ; then, from 1871 to 1876, in the house where Q. B. Nash now lives, at 26; then on the homestead at 22, until about 1885; then, until his death, in the new house at 20. 49. SAMUEL6 NIMS, son of Calvin5, 13, d. at Northampton, Mass., Sept. 1, 1859. He m. Johanna T. Oddo. The health of Samuel failed at a com- paratively early age, and he became deranged, and d. at the lunatic asylum in Northampton. We were informed that he had two sons who d. in youth before their father died.
50. DANIEL ADAMS6 NIMS, son of Calvin5, 13, was a prosperous farmer, who lived many years at 170, in S., where Allan M. Nims now lives. He purchased that farm in 1837, and lived there thirty-one years. In the last part of 1868, he purchased the old Hersey Wardwell place, at 98, and shortly after moved there, where he was living when he d., Nov. 21, 1871, his death re- sulting from being hit by a falling timber while taking down a barn on the old Hubbard farm, at 171, His death was nearly instantaneons. See page 368. He m., in 1836, Hephzibah Cummings Mason, b. in S., Aug. 30, 1814; d. in S., at 98, Nov. 12, 1876; dau. of Nathaniel and Sarah (Stone) Mason. They had four ch. :

2. GEORGE LYMAN7 NIMS, b. in S., at 170, Oct. 3, 1838; d. in S., at 108, at the house of his brother, M. A. Nims, Jan. 29, 1905, of pneumonia. He was a graduate of Middlebury College, A. B., 1865. He fitted for college at Kim- ball Union Academy, at Meriden, and, after graduation, pursued a course of study at the Andover Theological Seminary, graduating in 1870. He belonged . to the Trinitarian Congregational body, but was never ordained. He preached a year in Roxbury and supplied other pulpits for short intervals, but the failure of his health prevented his taking a permanent settlement. He was a bright man, a natural scholar, and a most worthy person. The utter breakdown of his health blasted the hopes of his material life-work, much to the regret of his friends, who understood his natural ability.
3. ALANSON AUGUSTUS7 NIMS, b. in S., at 170, June 11, 1840; d. there, Oct. 9, 1883. At his marriage, he settled upon the old homestead farm at. 170, where he continued to live until his death. He was a well-educated man, and served as the superintendent of the schools for several years. He held import- ant town offices, being the moderator of town meetings several years, and also one of the selectmen for some time. He was an excellent school-teacher. He m., June 18, 1869, Delia Ann Stow, b. in Hubbardston, Mass., May 7, 1840; d. there, Jan. 29, 1898; dau. of Ephraim and Sarah (Goodspeed) Stow. They had two ch., both b. in S., at 170. Both were well educated. When very young, they left S., with their mother. They were : I. She m., Oct. 17, 1839, Aaron Richardson, b. in Newton, Mass., Nov. 19, 1805 ; d. in Dublin, Sept. 9, 1861 ; son of David and Sarah (Whiting) Richardson. He was a farmer and res. in Dublin. Their only child was a son which died at or near birth.
52. FREDERICK BROWN6 NIMS, son of Philander5, 14, was a farmer in Sullivan. When a child, he went to live with his grandfather, Col. Solomon White, at 73. He bought this place, a few months before his marriage, of his grandfather. He was a capable business man and one of the most promi- nent and substantial citizens of the town. His children were among the most prosperous and enterprising persons who have ever left the town. They have all been prominent in the affairs of the communities where they have lived. He was m., Nov. 18, 1834, to Harriet Wardwell, b. in Nelson, June 11, 1814; d. in Keene, April 4, 1874; dau. of Ezra and Lois (Whitney) Wardwell. In the spring of 1857, Mr. Nims purchased the north-east corner at the Sullivan Four Corners, and built a good house on the spot that year, which still stands. He d. here, at 94, July 15, 1871. His eight ch. were all born on the old Solomon White place, at 73, where Mr. Nims's second son, George II.7 Nims, erected a fine marble monument, on the site of the old house, containing the names and birthdates of the eight children. It is hoped that this worthy precedent may be followed by others in the town. The children were :

He began business life as a farmer; was a time in the meat business ; and finally in the wood and lumber business, often buying and selling real-estate. He acquired a handsome competency and built a fine residence in Keene, on Washington St. He had a great fondness for his native town and erected the monument on the spot where his father's children were born, which we noticed in the third preceding paragraph. He m. Ist, May 17, 1866, Ruth Maria Hale, b. in Rindge, Oct. 19, 1838; d. in Keene, June 18, 1891 ; dau. of Moses and Ruth (Towne) Hale. He m. 2d, Oct. 5, 1892, Mary Mersylvia Sher- win of Rindge; b. there, Oct. 11, 1844; still living (1914) in Keene; dau. of Julius Celario and Silence J. (Adams) Sherwin. She was a successful school- teacher in Roxbury., Mass., and came of a family noted for scholarship and teachers. He owned for seven years, 1865-1872, and lived upon the Asahel Nims, Jr., farm in S., at 148. He then moved to Keene, which was afterwards his home. He had one ch .: I. Carrie Maria8 Nims, b. in S., at 148, Feb. 25, 1868. She is unm., and res. in Keene in 1914. She has been a reader in the Christian Science Church in Keene.
4. MARSHALL WILSON7 NIMS, b. in S., at 73, May 28, 1842. He was for some time in the meat and marketing business in Keene, later, a meat inspector for New England, for Swift, the famous dressed-beef dealer. He now (1914) res. in Concord, N. H. He m. Ist, Oct. 13, 1869, Ella Maria Goodnow, b. in S., March 11, 1847 ; d. in Winchendon, Mass., Apr. 3, 1885 ; dau. of Caleb, q. v., and Mary (Buss) Goodnow. He is the author of " Nims on Unfair Business Competi- tion." He m., June 8, 1907, Emma Collier Grant, b. at San Francisco, Cal., Nov. 24, 1877; dau. of George M. and Ella Whittemore (Scheuch) Grant. They res. at Bronxville, N. Y., where their three ch. were born : 1. Marshall Grant? Nims, b., July 11, 1908; 2. Bradford Grant9 Nims, b., March 17, 1910; 3. Godfrey9 Nims, b., Aug. 11, 1913; d., Aug. 19, 1913.
5. FRANCIS ORMOND7 NIMS, b. in S., at 73, Jan. 10, 1846; d. at Concord, N. H., April 19, 1906. He was in the meat and provision business in Keene, and became very prosperous. He had a love for the military calling. He enlisted in the N. H. National Guards in 1878, in the 2d Regiment He was promoted through the various grades of captain, major, lieutenant-colonel, and became

colonel, by brevet. He was a good officer and distinguished himself for effi- ciency. He had a high regard for his paternal ancestry, and erected a very fine monument at the graves of his father's great-grandfather and great-grand- mother, Mr. and Mrs. DAVID NIMS, in the Washington Street Cemetery. He m., Oct. 13, 1870, Ella Louisa Hall, b. in Walpole, Oct. 7, 1850; still living in Keene; dau. of Oliver and Maryetta Louisa (Watkins) Hall. They had one ch. : 1. Merton Francis8 Nims, b. in Keene, March 18, 1874; d. there, Nov. 14, 1882.

7. ABBY ANN HARRIET7 NIMS, b. in S., at 73, Aug. 2, 1850; m., Jan. 19, 1886, Flavel Beal, b. in Hanson, Mass., Jan. 16, 1851 ; son of Edwin and Sarah Douglass (Gibson) Beal. Mr. Beal is a grocer. They are now, 1914, res. in Springfield, Mass. Mr. Beal was previously m., July 26, 1877, to Ellen Frances Bates, b. in Hanson, Mass., July 26, 1852; d. in Keene, Oct. 2, 1884; dau. of Elbridge Gerry and Clara (Waterman) Bates. By the former marriage he had two ch. : 1. Ernest Gibson Beal, b. in Keene, Aug. 26, 1880; 2. Percy Alonzo Beal, b. in Keene, Dec. 26, 1883. By his second wife, he also had two ch. : 1. Clifford Francis8 Beal, b. in Keene, May 6, 1888; d. there, July 31, 1888 ; 2. Sarah Douglass8 Beal, b. in Keene, Apr. 21, 1891.

53. DAUPHIN WHITE6 NIMS, son of Philander5, 14, succeeded his grandfather, Dea. Zadok4 Nims, upon the old homestead farm at 152. He took the place in 1835, his grandfather settling the estate upon him, upon the con- dition that Dauphin should maintain him and comply with other stipulations. He lived on this farm forty-three years. In 1857, he took down the old man- sion which had stood at 152, and built the house at 153. He deeded the farm, in 1878, to his niece, Mrs. Octavia J. (Nims) Brooks, and moved to Keene, where he d., Aug. 11, 1886. He was a very prosperous farmer and acquired a handsome competency. He m., Oct. 12, 1837, Augusta Osgood, b. in S., Oct. 15, 1815; d. in Keene, Oct. 28, 1895; dau, of James White and Betsey (Wil- son) Osgood. They had no ch., but their kind home afforded shelter for many homeless children. They were prominent in all town affairs, supported the church liberally, entertained generously, and their bountiful hospitality was appreciated by many guests. Among others who lived in their home were the four daughters of David Nims, q. v .; Ann Paulina Miller, who married Nahum Wright (see page 1231, line 16) ; and Marquis D. L. Collester, q. v.
54. GEORGE WASHINGTON6 NIMS, son of Philander5, 14, d. in Keene, Feb. 1, 1888. He was a farmer and lived in S., at 104, thirty years, from 1837 to 1867, then he purchased the Martin Spaulding farm at 253, where he lived from 1867 to 1877. He then moved to Keene, where he d. as before stated. He m., May 31, 1838, Lucy Aplin, b. in S., May 16, 1814; d. in S., at 104, March 25, 1843; dau, of Ephraim and Lucy (Spaulding) Aplin. He m. zd, Feb. 6, 1845, Sarah Southwick, b. in Dublin (now Harrisville), Oct. 19, 1812; d. in S., at 104, March 3, 1864; dau. of Jedediah Kilburn and Dorcas (Twitchell) Southwick. The date of her death on the Sullivan vital records is wrong. After her death, her sister became the housekeeper in the home.

He m. 2d, Oct. 1, 1844, Mary Emery Morse, b. in Moulton- borough, N. H., Dec. 10, 1826; d. in Boston, Sept. 20, 1867; dau. of Moses and Abigail (Mason) Morse. He m. 3d, Nov. 6, 1876, Mrs. Maria Madden (Plummer) Breed, b. in Newburyport, Mass., Apr. 14, 1820; d. in Roxbury, Mass., Feb. 6, 1888; dau. of Abraham and Hannah (Hale) Plummer, and widow of Aaron F. Breed. He had three ch. :

(Sanborn) Pratt. He lived at Melrose Highlands, and was a hotel clerk in Boston, Mass. He had three ch. : 1. Foster Sanborn8 Nims, b. in Melrose, Mass., June 15, 1881 ; m., March 11, 1902, Josephine May Reilly, b. in Cambridge, Mass., Sept. 30, 1883 ; dau. of John Adams and Jeannie (Merrill) Reilly.
