V. BELA MASON FAMILY.

The ancestral line of this family is the same as that in the FAMILY OF SAMUEL MASON, the first of the Mason groups, through the first four generations : I. HUGH1; II. JOSEPHª; III. JOSEPH3, JR .; IV. BENJAMIN4. For further particulars respecting these ancestors, see pages 1109-IIIO.

1. BELA MASON, fifth generation in the line of descent, son of Ben- jamin+, IV. and Martha ( Fairbanks) Mason, was b. on the old Dublin home- Stead (now in Harrisville) where the late Solon Willard lived, Oct 4, 1764. Bela continued to live upon this homestead until the spring of 1810, when he bought the Samuel Mason place in S., at 4, to which he moved at once. He lived upon the site of 4 until about two years after his purchase, when he moved the house that stood there to the site of 6. While the old house stood at 6, his mother died in it (see page IIIO). The new house at 6 was built by Rufus Mason in 1836, and Bela Mason d. in it, Jan. 6, 1841. He was a prosperous farmer. He m., May 12, 1785, Sarah Norcross, b. in Dublin, June 10, 1768; d. in S., at 6, Mar. 12, 1846; dau. of Asa and Elizabeth Norcross. There were eight ch., all b. on the old homestead in Dublin (now Harrisville) : I. Betsey6, 2, b., Mar. 1, 1786; 2. Rufus6, 3, b., May 16, 1788; 3. James6, 4, b. Apr. 27, 1793 ; 4. Jesse6, 5, b., Mar. 30, 1795; 5. Ferusha6, b., Aug. 7, 1797 ; m. Curtis Spaulding, q. v. ; 6. Elijah6, 6, b., Apr. 14, 1799; 7. Sibyl Norcross6, b., Aug. 25, 1803; m. Ephraim Foster, q. v .; 8. Sarah6 (called Sallie), date of birth not found ; d. in S., at 4, May 18, 1810 (possibly the funeral date).

2. BETSEY6, MASON, dau. of Bela5, 1, d. in Keene, Aug. 1, 1857. She m. Ist, Dec. 26, 1807 (according to the private record of Rev. Elijah Willard of Pottersville, who married her, but which corrects the date of Nov. 22, given by other authorities), John Hoar of Dublin, who d., Feb. 13, 1813, in that town. She m. 2d, Jan. 27, 1823, Thomas Thompson of Keene, b. in Marlborough, Apr. 6, 1785; d. in Keene, June 4, 1857 ; son of Thomas and Sarah (Scott) Thomp- son. The date of her marriage to Mr. Thompson here given is that upon the Sullivan church records and is probably right. Jan. 31 in the first Dublin his- tory, and Feb. 27, in the Sullivan town records are both wrong. She had five ch. : 1. Oman Hoar7, b. in Dublin, Jan. 24, 1809; d. in Winchendon, Mass. He m. Harriet Atwood of North Brookfield, Mass., who also d. in Winchendon. He had no ch. 2. Daphne Hoar™, b. in Dublin, Feb. 25, 1811 ; d. in Keene, unm., Jan. 31, 1873. 3. John Hoar7, b. in Dublin, Apr. 13, 1813; d. in Nashua, June 24, 1846 ; m., Aug. 24, 1836, Mary Ann Davis, who d., July 16, 1846, in Keene ; ae. 30; dau. of Aaron and Rebecca (Nourse) Davis of Keene. He purchased the farm of his father, giving the latter the customary bond for maintenance, in 1814, and then built a house for himself on the site of 5. All of his ch. were born there. In 1836, the old house which stood at 6 (the one which still earlier had stood at 4) was moved across the road and became a carriage house, and Rufus built the fine mansion which now stands at 6, the house which had stood at 5 becoming an ell of it for many years. Here his father and mother died, and here he passed the remainder of his life. He was a prominent citizen and a prosperous farmer. See page 631, paragraph 6. He m. He m., Jan. 1, 1817, Myretta ()=good, b. in S., Mar. 22, 1796 ; place and date of death not determined ; dau. of Ezra and Susan- nah (White) Osgood. After Mr. Mason's death, she m. again, in 1828, Samuel R. Thompson, who d., Sept. 21, 1856, according to the published ()sgood geneal- ogy, which gives Sept. 23, 1825 as the date of Mr. Mason's death. We have found this Osgood book so faulty in many families that we cannot trust its statements with great confidence. Mr. Mason had three ch., all of whom were supposedly b. in Ontario, N. Y. They were : 1. Ormond Osgood7, b., Oct. 6, 1817 ; 2. Emily Elvira7, b., Sept. 24, 1822. 3. James Orlo7, b-, Dec. 20, 1823.

10. RUFUS OSGOOD7 MASON, A. M., M. D., son of Rufus6, 3, fitted for college at Thetford Academy in Vermont, and graduated at Dartmouth Col- lege, A. B., 1854; A. M., same college. After graduation, he entered the Union Theological Seminary. Just at this time, the careful, scientific study of theo- logical questions, which characterizes the schools of the present time, was begin- ning to receive attention. Being well educated and of a scholarly, critical habit of mind, he examined very painstakingly the theological problems which were brought to his attention, and he found that he was not in sympathy with the ancient tenets of Calvinism, in those days, so generally accepted. He accord- ingly abandoned the preparation for the ministry. He lived, however, to wit- ness a complete and thorough reaction from those old-time tenets in the Union Theological Seminary, and his course in life might have been quite different had the modern methods of instruction in that same institution prevailed in his day. As it was, while the ministry lost a bright light, the science of medicine gained one. He graduated from the College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York, a department now of Columbia University, in 1859. He became one of the leading surgeons and physicians of the metropolis. He was an acting assist- ant surgeon of the U. S. Navy, 1861-63, in the dark days of the Civil War. Between his leaving the Union Seminary and his entering the medical profession, he taught in a public school in Cleveland, Ohio, having as a pupil Wm. Rocke- feller, " then a little barefoot boy." Dr. Mason was deeply interested in meta- physical speculations and published several books upon the subject, as well as many magazine and newspaper articles. Among his publications may be noted : " Telepathy and the Subliminal Self; "" Hypnotism and Suggestion in Thera- peutics, Education and Reform ; " which publications " represent his work in bringing the facts of psychic research, and the beneficient possibilities of hypno- tism, sanely before the popular mind. In this field, he was a pioneer, a sincere worker, and an enthusiastic, yet critical, student. Some of his experiments
