1. FRANCOIS PLOUFFE, b. at Batiscan, P. Q., Aug. 15, 1822 ; d. in Marlborough, Aug. 22, 1900; son of Antoine and Therèse (Boisjoli) Plouffe. He m., July 14, 1845, Delineau Derosier, b. at L'Assomption, P. Q., Mar. 15, 1822 ; d. in Marlborough, Sept. 15, 1911 ; dau. of Joseph and Marguerite (Turcotte) Derosier. They lived in the early seventies in S., in a temporary shanty that stood on the Converse lot, in the north part of the town, in the eleventh lot of the eleventh range of the old Gilsum section of the town. He was a chopper. They had seven ch .: I. Delineuu, b. at " Charland Creek " (near the Canada line), Vt., Oct. 9, 1847; m. Ist, Jean Croteau, by whom she had 12 ch. She m. 2d Edouard Thomas. Nathaniel Poland d. in Langdon, Feb. 17, 1836, ae. 33 years. Nathaniel m. Lucinda Wilson, b. in Acworth, Jan. 31, 1808 ; d. in Westmoreland, Jan. 31, 1884, on her seventy-sixth birthday anniversary. She was the dau. of Joseph and Janet (Pinkerton) Wilson. After the death of Nathaniel Poland, she m., for her second husband, Jan. 4, 1841, Charles Rawson of S., who lived at 180, on the Charles H. I. SAMUEL POND FAMILY.


SAMUEL POND, supposed to be a native of Landaff, N. H. ; m., Jan. 14, 1841, Eliza Ann Phillips, b. in Nelson, May 25, 1818; d. in DeKalb, Ill., March 1867 ; dau. of Dea. Reuben and Rebecca (Foster) Phillips. They lived in S. from about 1843 to 1850, or longer. They lived at first about four years in a house (marked " Pond" on the map) on the West Road, a few rods below the corner of the road that leads to M. J. Barrett's. Afterwards, they lived three or four years in the old Winch house at 70. He was a brickmaker by trade. Their ch. were : Rozelia A., b. in Roxbury, June 21, 1842; m. Josiah Parker, 3d, q. v .; 2. II. THOMAS POND FAMILY.


THOMAS POND and Sally, his wife, were living in Sullivan, in 1796, according to the records. He seenis not to have been a voter or legal resident. We do not know where he lived. They had a ch., Betsey, b. in S., June 12, 1796.


POPPLE.


LOUIS POPPLE and Caroline, his wife, were living in Sullivan, in 1865-6, probably in a shanty west of the David Seward house, in the woods. They had a son, Fred L., b. there, in 1865 or 1866.

I. RICHARDI PORTER settled in Weymouth, Mass. in 1635. Ile was a member of the original church at Weymouth, He d. ab. 1689. Four ch. are known. II. JOHN2 PORTER, eldest son of preceding, m., Feb. 9, 1660, Deliverance Byram, dau. of Nicholas and Martha (Shaw) Byram. He was a prominent man in Weymouth, where he d., Aug. 17, 1717. His widow d., Sept. 30, 1720. III. THOMAS3 PORTER, son of preceding, m., ab. 1706, Susannah, dau. of Matthew and Sarah (Hunt) Pratt. IV. EZRA4 PORTER, son of preceding, b. at Weymouth, Sept. 8, 1725, m., ab. 1751, Hannah, dau. of Joseph and Ruth (Richards) Lovell, who was b., Dec. 17, 1723. She d., and he m. 2d Patience, dan. of Solomon and Temperance Hathaway, who was b., Oct. 21, 1741. He res. at Weymouth. V. JOEL PORTER, son of preceding, by the former w., b. at Weymouth, Mass., June 16, 1755; m., in 1780, Lavina Woods b. ab. 1757. He went to Marlborough, N. H., in 1780, and located near the foot of Mt, Monadnock. His farm was partly in Dublin. He served two years in the Revolution and was wounded in the ankle at Bunker Hill. He d. in Marlborough, Sept. 8, 1824. His wife d. there, August 1819.


1. DAVID6 PORTER, son of Joel and Lavina (Woods) Porter, b. in Marlborough, April 15, 1784; d. in Gilsum, Aug. 24, 1867. He res. in S., Alstead, and Gilsum, and was a farmer. In S., he lived several years, ab. 18c9, to 1819, upon the old Farrar farm at 183. 1. JONATHAN POWELL, was the son of an Englishman, who came to America at some time before the Revolution and lived, at least for a time, in Litchfield, N. H., where Jonathan was born, Oct. 27, 1776. He was a farmer and mechanic, and d. in Chittenden, Yt., May 11, 1842. He m., March 11, 1802, Hannah Proctor, b. in Ashby, Mass., March 31, 1782 ; d. in Rutland, Vt. (date undetermined) ; dau. of Philip and Hannah (Locke) Proctor. After his marriage, he lived, 1802 to 1806, on the old Thomas Morse (afterwards James Rowe) place, at 65, just west of where the Whites live. He then moved to

II. FAMILY OF THOMAS POWELL.


1. THOMAS2 POWELL, a brother of Jonathan2 Powell of the preceding section, was b., March 13, 1772, probably in Litchfield, N. H. He d., August 25, 1842, probably at Pittsford, Vt., where his body was buried. He was a farmer and a cordwainer. After his marriage, he lived in S., from 1796 to 1807 or 1808 (probably at the house of his wife's father, at IC3); about 1807 and 1808, he was living in Gilsum ; from 1809 to 1811, he was in S. again, living on what was later the Collester farm, at 228. He then moved to Mt. Holley, Vt., but was probably living in Pittsford, Vt., at his death. He m., March 7, 1796, Sarah (usually called Sally) Baker, b. in S. (that part of the town which was then in Gilsum), at 103, April 25, 1778; d., Jan. 21, 1871, probably in Pittsford, Vt., where her body was buried, at the great age of 92 years and nearly nine months ; the dau. of Jonathan and Sarah (Holt) Baker. Mr. and Mrs. Powell had eleven ch .:


I. BETSEY3 POWELL, b. in S., probably at 103, June 12, 1796, m., Oct. 3, 1818, Lyman Rockwood, b. in Fitzwilliam, Jan. 15, 1794; d. at Franklinville, N. J., May 5, 1869 ; son (probably) of Samuel and Rhoda (Johnson) Rockwood. No further particulars of this family were reported.


2. SARAH3 POWELL (called Sally Powell), b. in same place as the pre- ceding, Feb. 1, 1798; d. in Bloomfield, Conn., July 28, 1857 ; m., June 3, 1817, David Chapin, who d. in Enfield, Conn., July 10, 1839; son of Oliver and Elizabeth (Allen) Chapin. The facts here given are verified, and correct the History of Gilsum and other authorities. They had six ch .: I. Betsey Maria + Chapin, b. in Surry, July 16, 1818; m. 4. JANE3 POWELL, b. at the same place as the preceding, Nov. 11, 1800. We have learned no further particulars respecting her.


5. ELIZA3 POWELL, b. at the same place as the preceding, Sept. 19, 1802. She m. a man named Hathorn, but we have not been able to trace her family record.


6. ROXANA3 POWELL, b. at the same place as all of the preceding, Sept. 19, 1804. She is said to have m. a man of the name of Parmelee, but we have learned no further particulars with respect to her.


7. THOMAS3 POWELL, Jr., b. in same place as all the preceding ch. of Thomas Powell, Feb. 20, 1807. We have not been able to derive any particulars of his life. He left Sullivan as a child, never to return.


8. MARY ANN3 POWELL, b. in Gilsum, according to the History of Gilsum, Oct. 18, 1808 ; married a man of the name of Perkins, but we can learn nothing of her subsequent history.


9. ARVILLA3 POWELL, b. in S., at 228, June 24, 1810; d. in Gilsum, Jan. 8, 1815.


IO. GEORGE3 POWELL, b. in Gilsum, July 23, 1812 ; d. there, Aug. 29, 1812.


II. DANIEL3 SMITH POWELL, b. in Gilsum, March 29, 1814 ; d. in infancy.


PRECKLE.


FERDINAND1 PRECKLE, a native of Germany, came to America and lived at Sand Lake, N. Y .; also in Keene, where he d., Nov. 19, 1833, at the age of 35. His wife was Mary Ann Murphy.


1. JOHN RICHARD2 PRECKLE, son of Ferdinand1, was b. at Sand Lake, Rensselaer Co., N. Y., March 12, 1820. He was twice m., and res. in Keene, Cleveland, N. Y., and S. In the latter town, he bought the old Bolster, or Solon Esty, place at 128, March 31, 1871, the deed conveying it to his wife. He lived on this place until his death, June 5, 1878, and the farm has ever since remained in the family, 44 years (to 1915), being one of the longest family tenures in the town. Mr. Preckle was a glass-blower and worked as such in the old glass factory in Keene. In S., he cultivated a small farm, which has now become mostly covered with brush. He m. Ist, in Keene, by Rev. Mr. Morgan, Jan. 24, 1839, Rhoda Ann Stevens Briggs, b. in Westmoreland, about 1812; d. there, Nov. 23, 1842, ae. 30 ; dau, of Lemuel and Polly (Stevens) Briggs. He

2. WILLIAM HENRY3 PRECKLE, son of John R 2., 1, m., Feb. 8, 1863, in Keene, by Rev. I. C. Knowlton, Mary Hastings, b. in S., Jan. 27, 1841 ; dau. of William and Lestina (Emerson) Hastings. Mr. Preckle learned the trade of a machinist and followed that business for many years, in the railroad shops at Keene and also in Olean, N. Y. He has been prospered and, after reaching the age of seventy, retired from business, and returned to Keene, where he has a comfortable home on Washington St., whose kindly hospitality is extended to the many friends who visit them. Both Mr. and Mrs. Preckle take an active interest in social affairs. Mr. Preckle has taken all degrees in the York Rite of Freemasonry, and is a 32d degree Mason. Mrs. Preckle is active in the Eastern Star, and has been a Deputy Grand Matron for the state of New York. They had two ch .: I. William Briggs 4, b. in S., at 141, Sept. 26, 1863, 3; 2. Mabel Lestina 4, b. in Keene, May 23, 1865; d., unm., at Olean, N. Y., Jan. 28, 1908. She was a brilliant young woman, well educated, an artist with her needle, and her paintings, drawings, and embroideries are a monument to her skill and industry.
