I. JOHN1 STOW came to America in one of Winthrop's Companies, arriving "7th of 3d month, 1634," and settled at Roxbury. His wife Elizabeth, who d. 1638 and six ch. came with him. He was made a freeman in 1634 and a member of the "Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company" 1638, and representative, in 1639. Ch. were probably Thomas, John, Elizabeth, Nathaniel, Samuel (Harvard College, 1645) and Thankful; all b. in England. II. NATHANIEL2 STOW, undoubted- ly the son of John1, b. in England, came to America with his father; settled in Concord, Mass., where he d. May 30, 1684; m. (1), Elizabeth, who d. at Concord, June 8, 1661; m. (2), Aug. 20, 1662, Martha Big- nell (probably for Bicknell), who d. in Concord, Dec. 26, 1717 in her 90th year. III. EBENEZER3 STOW, son of Nathaniel2 and Martha, was b. Concord, June 28, 1668; lived in Concord and m. May 2, 1700, Abigail Parling. IV. AMOS4 STOW, son of Ebenezer8 b. (2), Apr. 7, 1868, Sarah Deborah Locke, b. Ashburnham, Mass .; dau. of William Dane and Miranda (Adams) Locke of New Ipswich. She is a graduate of Mount Holyoke College. After her husband's very sad and sudden death (Rev. J. H. Stow d. May 9, 1877, the fatal result of being thrown from a carriage that same day) she completed and carried through the press his History of Hubbardston. He lived in Sullivan, from 1863 to 1870, as pastor of the 1st Cong. ch., and was the first to occupy the new parsonage building. One ch. b. Walpole, Alfred Ephraim8, b. Oct. 19, 1855; d. JOSEPH1 SYMONDS, was b. in Shirley, Mass., Jan. 30, 1746; was a soldier of the Revolution. He settled in Groton. Mass .; removed to New Ipswich and finally to Hancock where he d. Oct. 15, 1820. The first time the church bell in Hancock was tolled was for his death. He m. Submit (called Mittie), dau. of Lieut. John and Sarah (Lawrence) Cummings. She was b. Groton, Mass., Dec. 25, 1751; d. Hancock, Jan. 7, 1827. They had six ch. II. CHARLES2 SYMONDS, son of Joseph1, b. Hancock, Mar. 23, 1785; d. Marlow, July 20, 1854; m. Dec. 26, 1809, Sally Dennis, b. Hancock, Nov. 25, 1784; d. Marlow, Oct. 28, 1857; dau. of Moses and Sarah (Frye) Dennis. Mr. Symonds lived in Hancock village and was an inn-keeper. He had nine ch. who lived to maturity and married, among them was Hon. John3 Symonds, b. Han- cock, May 18, 1816, 1.


1. HON. JOHN$ SYMONDS, son of Charles2, m. Nov. 3, 1841, Car- oline Elizabeth Robbins, b. Nelson, Dec. 20, 1821; d. Keene, Oct. 19, 1890; dau. of Ira and Jerusha (Taft) Robbins. No children. He res. LUKE WARD TAYLOR was b. in Jaffrey, d. in Springfield, Vt. The name of his wife is not known to us. They had George, Albert, Lucy and Henry b. in Springfield, Vt. They had several ch. b. in S .: Julia was b. in the Will Bates house; Cynthia, Arthur and Charles Henry were b. in the Eaton house. We have no further record of the family.

WILLIAM2 TOWNE, b. in England abt. 1600, and believed to be the son of Richard1 Towne of Braceby, England, came from either Yarmouth or Bristol, England, with his wife, Joanna (Blessing) Towne, and five or six ch. and lived in Salem, Mass. They had eight children so far as known. II. JOSEPH3 TOWNE, son of William2, I. b. abt. 1639, Salem, Mass., d. Topsfield, Mass. in 1713; m. Phebe, dau. of Thomas Perkins of Topsfield. He moved from Salem to Topsfield, Mar. 22, 1670; was a member of the Topsfield church; had nine children. III. JOSEPH JR.4 TOWNE, son of Joseph3, II, b. Topsfield, Mar. 22, 1673, d. there, May 28, 1757; m. (1), Nov. 9, 1699, Margaret Case, who d .; m. (2), Nov. 5, 1707, Abigail Curtis, b. Oct. 21, 1680; d. Mar. 8, 1729; m. (3), Feb. 21, 1730, Mary Mower of Lynn, who d. Oct. 2, 1739. IV. ISRAEL5 TOWNE, son of Joseph Jr.4, III, by his first wife Margaret, was b. at Topsfield, Mass., Mar. 24, 1705; d. Amherst, N. H., 1791. He m. May 23, 1729, Grace Gardner of Middletown, Mass., who d. at Amherst in 1803. His is said to have been the fourth family to settle in Narragansett, No. 3, now Amherst, N. H. He had eight chil- dren: Thomas, Archelaus, Israel, Moses, Gardner, Elizabeth, Susannah and Mary. V. ISRAEL JR.6 TOWNE, son of Israel5, IV, b. Topsfield, Nov. 16, 1736; went with his father to Amherst; moved to Stoddard in 1782, and d. there, Apr. 28, 1813; m. July 31, 1760, Lydia, dau. of Benjamin Hopkins, b. abt. 1737, d. at Stoddard, Mar. 3, 1826 in her 89th year. He had nine children: Israel, William, Gardner, Benjamin, Andrew, Lydia who d. young, Daniel, Hannah (who m. Ebenezer Ban- croft), and Lemuel. VI. ISRAEL 3d7 TOWNE, son of Israel Jr.6, V, b. Amherst, N. H., June 14, 1761, d. Stoddard, May 2, 1848; m. Hannah Abbott of Stoddard, d. at Stoddard, Mar. 9, 1847. They had nine chil- dren: Lydia (Mrs. Oliver Hodgman), Archelaus, Israel, Hannah (Mrs. Asa Copeland), Esther (Mrs. Isaac Howe), Grace (killed by a falling tree), Gardner, Ebenezer, Lucy (Mrs. Samuel Upton).
