Vt., Aug. 15, 1870; son of Jacob and Molly (Mary) Wheeler. She d. at Chittenden, Vt., Dec. 17, 1837. According to Mr. Wheeler's family Bible he was m. to Hannah Sept. 1, 1805; according to S. church records, Hannah m. Mr. Wheeler upon the same day that her sister Abigail m. Edward Wilder, which day was Sept. 29, 1805. According to the Wilder Bible, Mr. and Mrs. Wilder were m. Sept. 30, 1805. As Sept. 29 would have fallen on Sunday that year, I incline to the belief that the family Bible records are correct. A Jonas Wheeler, b. at Keene May 9, 1777, son of Abraham, Jr., must not be confused with this Jonas, although he may have been a kinsman.


Mr. Wheeler was a farmer and Justice of the Peace; he was a man of marked ability, held several offices and was highly esteemed. He had one son by Hannah, 1. David5 Wheeler, b. at Chittenden, Vt., June 15, 1806; d. there Oct. 4, 1811. Jonas Wheeler m. (2), Mar. 21, 1838, Fanny Ridell, b. Dec, 2, 1796; d. in Mich. Two sons: Edwin5 Wheeler, b. Rutland, Vt., Dec. 8, 1838; d. Nov. 23, 1840; Seneca Erving5 Wheeler, b. Rutland, June 13, 1841; d. in the army at Baton Rouge, La., Aug. 8, 1862. He was in the 7th Vt. Reg. He had a fever, and when con- valescing, bought and ate a pie, which produced a relapse, from which he did not recover. He was m. June 13, 1858 to Ellen Elizabeth Foster, b. in Mendon, Vt., Aug. 29, 1866. She m. (2), Feb. 4, 1864, John Holt Noyes of Mendon.


Mrs. Fanny (Ridell) Wheeler's mother was Fanny, whose 2nd hus- band was William Wright, and both were buried on a farm in the north part of Rutland.


4. JOSIAH+ JR. SEWARD, son of Dea. Josiah3, 1, inherited part and purchased the remainder of his father's farm in S., No. 139. He survived his father but little more than three years, and d. in S., Sept. 14, 1831.


Several were sick in his house at once of typhus fever, which was very prevalent that year, and, of which, he and his son both died. He m. Feb. 22, 1807, Polly Wilson, b. in Keene, Mar. 23, 1784; d. in Keene, Sept. 19, 1864; dau. of Daniel and Abigail (Morse) Wilson. Three ch. b. S .: 1. Josiah 3d5, b. 21. JAMES BYRON6 SEWARD, son of David5, 11, was educated at Westbrook Seminary and Kimball Union Academy at Meriden. He began business as a clerk in the store of Whitcomb and Dunbar of Keene. He was afterwards in the employ of George A. Fenno & Co. of Boston; A. T. Stewart in New York City; also Union Adams & Co., and Mills and Gibbs in New York. Then he was in business for himself, at first having Mr. J. E. Tourtellot as partner. For several years up to the time of his death he was with James Jamison & Co., in the hosiery business, in New York City. He d. Oct. 21, 1918; m. Oct. 18, 1877, Sarah Annie Mott, b.
