He lived a short time, about 1853, in the old Captain Nims house in S., at 149. He was a farmer. He m., Oct. 15, 1850, Betsey Fay Seward, b. in S., Aug. 25, 1829; still living (1911) in Walpole; dau. of Abijah and Roxana (Fay) Seward. They had two ch .: 1. Fred. LE CLAIRE.


ALFRED LE CLAIRE married Olivine Rochon. He was b. in Brandon, Vt., and she was b. in St. Urbain, P. Q. They stopped in S., a few weeks in 1905-06, at the old Leland house, at 251, while he was engaged in chopping. While there, their third ch., Joseph Arthur, was b., Feb. 11, 1906. They were not legal residents of the town. We did not learn the names of the elder two children.


LELAND.


The Lelands belong to an old and honored New England family. The line of descent is from I. HENRY1 LELAND, who was b. in England ab. 1625, and came to America ab. 1652. II. He d. in Sherborn in 1810.


1. JEREMIAH6 LELAND, eldest son of Micah5, b. in Sherborn, Mass., June II, 1764; d. in S., at 251, Feb. 26, 1847. He m., in Natick, Mass., by Wm. Boden, J. P., May 25, 1791, Abigail Haven (called "Nabby " Haven), b. in Natick, Mass., May 8, 1769; d. in S., at 251, Mar. 13, 1853; dau. of David and Abigail (Prentiss) Haven of Natick. Mr. Leland moved from Natick to S. in 1798, where he lived 49 years, until his death, excepting two years that he lived in Dublin. He lived first nearly 7 years in a log house that stood a little north- west of where Lyman Davis lives. In 1799 he bought this farm on which the present house stands at 26, where Q. B. Nash lives. In 1806, he sold it and moved to Dublin for about two years, when he returned and lived a short time on what is known as the old Haven place, at 28, and later, a short time in the old Rider house, at 21, nearly on the site of Hon. D. W. Rugg's house. In 1811, he moved to the place where David Nims afterwards lived, at 160, which he owned until 1819, when he moved to the old Dimick-Saunders house, at 242, and shortly after to the site of Mr. Chapin's house, at 232. moved to the old Muzzy house at 87, where he was living in 1827-28, and had Rev. J. Peabody for a boarder. From 1834 to 1835, he lived with his son, Asa, on the old Oliver Brown place, at 229; when they all moved to the place at 251, which Asa had purchased. He had five ch. : 1. 3. ASA7 LELAND, son of Jeremiah6, 1, was a farmer. He lived a year after his marriage in the Joseph Seward house, at 99, then one year or more, in the old Oliver Brown house, at 229. In 1835, he bought the farm at 251, which has ever since been known as the Leland place, and lived there till his death, Sept. 9, 1867. He was twice married. He m. ist, Dec. 12, 1833, Mary Ann Brown, b. in S., Sept. 12, 1811 ; d. in S., at 251, Feb. 5, 1846; dau. of Oliver and Mary (Mason) Brown. He m. 2d, Mar. 30, 1847, Hannah Abbott Howe, b. in Stoddard, Dec. 27, 1814; d. in Framingham, Mass., Mar. 8, 1892; dau. of Isaac and Esther (Towne) Howe. Three ch., all b. in S., at 251 : I. 1. FREDERICK ALBEE LEWIS, son of William1 and Mary (Brad- ford) Lewis, was b. in Marlow, Jan. 3, 1860. He learned the trade of a tanner and worked at that business in Marlow and East S. In the latter town, he boarded with Mr. Stevens at 40, also with Lyman Davis, then living at 33; but principally with Alvin Young, who then lived at 36. He is now a carpenter, living at 95 Adams St., in Keene. He m. Ist, Jan. 4, 1884, Zilla Jane Rogers, (received in youth into the family of Wellman J. Powers, and known as Zilla J. Powers), b. in Surry (?), Jan. 27, 1862; d. in Marlow, Apr. 28, 1889. He m. 2d, Jan. 13, 1891, Eldora Sarah Farnsworth, b. in Washington, N. H., Oct. 13, 1868; still living in Keene; dau. of Stephen Mead and Elvira Rebecca (Russell) Farnsworth. He lived in East S., before his marriage, 1880-1882. He had a daughter by each wife: 1. He came to S. about 1863-4, and lived about four years at 16, at East S. From 1868 to 1871, he owned and lived upon the Franklin Buckminster farm at 24. He then lived in Cambridge, Mass., and Waltham, Mass. He was a policeman in Waltham, and d. there, Oct. 5, 1889; the burial being in Antrim. He m., in Antrim, by Rev. John M. Whiton, Dec. 1, 1842, Clarinda Brackett, b. in Antrim, Mar. 20, 1819; dau. of James and Hannah (Carr) Brackett. She d., March, 1908, in Providence, R. I. They had three ch. : 1. He was a prominent man of affairs; was in the Revolution ; was also in the Mass. legislature. He was a farmer and a land surveyor. 3. JAMES" LOCKE, JR., son of Lieut. James5, 1, owned the farm at 71, and lived upon it, from about 1784 to 1789. He then went to Thetford, Vt., where he d., Oct. 1789, the result of a millstone falling upon him. His wife was Susannah Kimball of Pepperell, Mass., b., June 1756; d. in S., perhaps at 71, Nov. 14, 1842. After the death of Mr. Locke, she m. 2d, Dec. 30, 1798, to David Bill, q. v., by whom she had a dau. Susannah, who d. unm. See under DAVID BILL. James and Susannah had three ch. : 1. 4. EUNICE6 LOCKE, dau. of Lieut. James5, 1, m. in Townsend, Mass., Jan. 1, 1787, Edward Richards, b. in Rockingham (?), Vt., Oct. 4, 1763, son of Charles Richards of that town, and afterwards of Townsend. A story is told of Eunice, which her niece, Mrs. Cynthia (Locke) Gerould, told the writer was authentic, that when her brother John was drafted into the Revolution, and had no suitable clothes to wear, Eunice, a girl of only about seventeen, went to the pasture, caught a black sheep and a white sheep, sheared them, carded the wool, spun it, wove cloth enough with warp of one color and woof of the other to make a suit, and cut and made a suit of clothes for John, all inside of forty- eight hours.
