II. FAMILY OF NATHANIEL MASON.
1. NATHANIEL6 MASON was a brother of SAMUELE MASON, the head of the first family of the Mason groups, through the line of HUGH1, JOSEPH2, JOSEPH3, BENJAMIN4, and JOSEPH5. He was the son of Joseph5 and Anne (Prentice) Mason, and was b. in Dubiln (now Harrisville, site of Bell-Dillingham mansion), Feb. 8, 1776. He settled in 1797 at East Sullivan, and built the first house in that village, now the ell of the house of Thomas A. Hastings, at 14. He also built the first mill in the village, a saw and grist mill, on the site of the mill afterwards owned by the Goodnows, and now by T. A. Hastings, at II. He owned this property until his death, at 14, Nov. 12, 1841. He ni., at Potters- ville, by Rev. E. Willard, July 16, 1800, Sarah (Sally) Stone of Fitzwilliam ; b. there, Mar. II, 1780; d. in S., at her daughter's, Mrs. Wardwell's at 236, Aug. 20, 1865. She was the dau. of Hezekiah and Elizabeth Valentine (Ballard) Stone. Ist, May 31, 1830, Horace Whitcomb of Boston, Mass., b. in Townshend, Vt., Mar. 16, 1805; d. in S., at 14, May 7, 1831 ; son of Cyrus Whitcomb. She m. 2d. Nov. 10, 1834, Israel Rea of Topsfield, Mass ; b. there, Mar. 1, 1803; d. there, Feb. 17, 1883; son of Israel and Lois Rea. She was educated at Miss Fiske's school in Keene, and was a teacher of great ability. She had six ch., the first ch. was b. in S., at 14, the others were b. in Topsfield, Mass. : 1. Alanson Augustus Whitcomb8 Rea, b., Oct. 28, 1837 ; d. in Topsfield, Dec. 3, 1838. 4. Alonzo Augustus Whiting 8 Rea, b., Oct. 28, 1837, twin to preceding, grad. at Dartmouth Coll., 1860, taking the name of Alonzo Rea. He was a broker in San Francisco, afterwards on the U. S. Coast Survey. He, later, moved to Boston; is married; no issue. 5. Eliza Ann Adelaide8 Rea, b., Aug. 2, 1840, grad. at Mt. Holyoke Seminary, a teacher in the Winchell School in Boston, Mass. 6. Sarah Lois Mason8 Rea, b., Jan. 12, 1842 ; grad. at Lasell Seminary at Auburndale, Mass .; a teacher in Boston, Mass., where she d., unm., Aug. 21, 1884.
3. JESSE7 MASON, son of Nathaniel6, 1, was a farmer at Cabot, Vt., where he d., Oct. 15, 1877. He m., Dec. 14, 1831, Mary Leavett of Cabot, Vt., b. there (?), Oct. 15, 1813; d. in Cumberland, Me., Sept. 20, 1893. They had four ch., all probably b. in Cabot, Vt. : 1. 4. SARAIF MASON. dau. of Nathanieli, 1, d. at Neponset, Mass., Feb. 17, 1887. She m., June 2, 1830, Stillman Stone of Marlborough, b. there, Aug. 22 (according to family record, but Aug. 20, in His. of M.), 1802 ; killed by a fall, while taking down an old mill, at Solon, Me., Nov. 19, 1853. He was the son of Shubael and Polly (Rogers) Stone. They had eight ch. :

The date is incorrectly given as Jan. 16, on page 323. The only name on her headstone is the word " Mother." The placing of the name on the back of the stone was inadvertently omitted. She m. Levi Mason of Boston, Mass., b. in Swanzey, Jan. 1, 1819; d. in Hudson, Mass., July 19, 1892 ; son of Hale and Lucy (Lane) Mason. She had two ch. : I. Levi Augustus8, b. in Boston, Mar. 4, 1841 ; d. there, Sept. 8, 1841 ; burial in the King's Chapel Cemetery. 2. Eunice Elizabeth 3, b. in Boston, June 16, 1844. She grad. with highest honors from the high and normal schools in Boston. She m., Sept. I, 1865, Ermon Dwight Eastman of Phillips, Me .; b. there, Apr. 12, 1839; son of Benjamin F. and Eliza (I)yer) Eastman. He was three years in the Civil War, and a first lieutenant He also served in a campaign against the Sioux Indians in Dakota. He is a successful merchant in Portland, Me. They have no ch.
